Hi all,
Yesterday, I had the opportunity to play a game on Universal Battle (!!) with someone who was learning WFB. Of course, I directed him to this forum, but I had a question on a situation that I hadn't seen before:
Ona turn of mine shooting, my Dwarf cannon had complete flank view of a group of 5 Demigryphs. I shot and the cannon ball first bounced before the 1st demi, and then I rolled a 10, so it went through them all. By BRB, a cannon shot to the flank sues files as ranks, so 5 demi grgyphs on a single line, meant 5 ranks. We did the 2+, D6 wounds and I happened to have rolled a 2+ on each one and 4, 5 or 6 wounds each time (meaning each Demigryph died as the cannon went through). Result: All 5 Demis died.
Was that played correctly? And if not, how is it played?
Here's an illustration:
==o x DDDDD --x
Result: Death.

A great example of why Monstrous Cavalry needs to try to avoid giving up a flank shot to cannons. The chances of all the demigryphs dying like that is very low though as it's a 1/3 to fail to kill one with wounds and the cannonball stops.

Correctly played but hey I have loaded dice too but you don't use them on a newbie! Unless you're playing Skaven...

I know in older versions if you hit a flank (or even straight on) the path of the cannon ball would alter to get the maximum number of models, in 8th I'm looking at the picture on page 112. the result is the same 3 models but the PATH is straight from the cannon hitting a maximum of one model in each rank. As I say, in previous editions hitting the flank would have resulted in 5 hits.
You played it correctly for wounds etc though, you have to kill and multi wound creature before moving on.

livewaaaaagh made a flank shot. BRB p. 113: If the cannon is in the target's flank, the target's files count as ranks. Given that the Demis were 5x1, and the cannonball went through all of them, all DGK were hit, which still is only one per rank.

Do people alter the direction of shot then?

No. As explained above, if the cannon is in the target's flank, the target's files count as ranks. In this case: what is normally a unit of 1 rank and 5 files counts as a unit of 1 file and 5 ranks. As the cannon was more or less perpendicular to the target, the bounce hit all models in that unit of 1 file and 5 ranks, thus hitting one model per rank.

ouch! LiveWaaaagh I left too soon, I missed a fun game... surely taught him an important lesson about avoiding enfilading fire huh?
Any chance you'll be around today for a round on UB?
