Progress report: Dwarf grave guard done, skeletons moving along and I've added 3 crypt horrors. Up next will be more skeletons (the goal is 50 this week) and also some wolves and a vampire.

I love the Scarecrow Crypt Horror! That's a GREAT idea! (You should totally make a unit of Blood Knights as Headless Horsemen!) Also, great work on the Grave Guard Dwarf Miners! (They delved too deep...) The etherial flames are an especially nice touch!

Thanks Don. Yeah in the previous version of this army, I felt that it lacked cohesiveness, no identity. That has always been my struggle with vampire counts. Skeleton troops (skels, gg, BKs) are ancient warriors so shouldn't mirror any modern warhammer aesthetic. Zombies though, they are recently dead and should look like modern troops. Then you've got ghouls and horrors, vargheists, wolves, bats, etc. They don't wear uniforms so have no real identity except for their skin and fur. Will all ghoulish guys in an army really have the exact same skin tone? You know? I'm trying to use that ethereal thing (as you saw in the candle flames) but that's really al I've got right now.
So here I am torn between cohesive army theme and what is the fluff of my force. With Empire and WoC, the theme is clear. They are an army, have uniforms, a leader, etc.
I've got this space wolf gray/hunter green scheme for my ancient guys (skeleton crew). This would represent that they all came from some ancient battlefield or ancient kingdom. I've even got a decrepit little vampire guy who could be their immortal leader.
The zombies are a mish mash but have many dead versions of my Imperial army.
I've also got a "red" and a "white" vampire. These 2 guys are younger vampires, suave dudes. I really like the idea of undead Bretts (my blood knights are vampire grail knights).
I'd love some theme advice from the forum. I feel like VC are the worst army to make look cohesive.
My hope over the next year is to "complete" this VC army including fluff, character names, and stuff.

Hmmm. I kinda think that a proper VC army shouldn't look very cohesive. The Vampire or Necromancer just raises whatever's around.
The one thing that I think could tie them together better than anything else are their eyes. You could give them an emissive glow, showing a possession of some sort. Kinda similar to the etherial idea you have, but more from within. Or possibly a necrotic ooze (mist?) running along the bases of each piece.

Added wolves, more skeletons (didn't make my goal of 50 in the week but 30), some more zombies, and I made 10 movement trays (not al for this army though).

Lookin' good!
You know, a Werewolf here and there as a Varghulf could be a really cool addition. I just like some of the Werewolf models out there.

I've got one! I'm also going to use a few smaller ones in my crypt horror unit. Stay tuned.
