See, that's what happened here too. I worked for ages building a strong, numerous local gaming community, and when it became evident that 8th was no longer being supported, EVERYONE here quit. We even had a guy who ran a painting commission business and worked with several well-known BatRepers, who just gave up on all of it because of the switch. I had to start over with some friends who had never played before just to get it going again.

And I hate AoS. Funny how posts against AoS bring out it's defenders though. Like I slapped their baby or something. If that's aimed at me I don't think correcting the facts on timing is being a "defender" particularly as I point out that 'no points' was a mistake (which was your point as well. . . just your perception of the timing of the fix was incorrect.) We are on an 8th ed forum 'for life' - the aren't many 'defenders' of AoS here. I'm probably the closest to it here. I'm definitely in the 'hate isn't going to help this community succeed' group though. I also think being clear on 'reality' is important, as hate, and self spun narratives devoid of connection to objective reality don't lead to healthy long term outcomes and decisions - see politics in far too many places for example. I'm NOT accusing you mottdon of doing that. I am trying to be sure our community doesn't succumb to hate or to spinning narratives that are divorced from reality. I'm also someone who works pretty hard to grow this forum on social media and have fiercely pushed the EEFL sub event at my GT because I believe in what our community is doing (play the games you love!.)

I recently paid a visit to the 9th Age forum, mainly to see if it's dead yet. Keep in mind that my sample set is small as I read posts for maybe 30 minutes, but I ran across one area that made me lol. Under the section where they describe "why 9th Age" or "what's this about", a reasoning for 9th over 8th was that players could finally use models from other manufacturers without being constrained by GW only models. This cracked me up as everyone I know playing 8th uses tons of non-GW figs. Like, who were these police that required only GW minis? Couldn't players use whatever they wanted at the Indy GTs? There haven't been GW GTs for years so I couldn't even figure out who they were catering to with that reason.

I didn't aim my comments toward anyone. That's what I see in most cases where 8th edition, AoS or 9th age are brought up. I'd never single anyone out.
As for my "hate of AoS", I just threw that in there mostly as a joke. Intent on the internet really sucks. BUT I don't know how many times I've been blasted just for merely mentioning that I liked 8th more than AoS on BatRep comments, Forums, in game stores, etc. It's like there's this huge fear of 8th edition out there for some reason. GW decided they didn't want to keep supporting it, so that opened up the floodgates for 8th ridicule. I started this thread thinking it was funny how AoS started off as this completely separate game from 8th, a clean break, but the more time passes, the more 8th-like it becomes.
I WILL, however, attempt to refrain from commenting about AoS on this site. It is a forum that is supposed to be about 8th edition, so we should stick to that.
As for 9th age, I believe that our two groups are close in heart for our love of the game, and they made a valid attempt to keep the game alive and moving forward, I just don't think that it needed all the changes that they adopted. Only a few minor tweaks was all that was needed. That was why I decided to stick with 8th. I hate that most of the BatRepers went the 9th route, but I can totally understand that they needed fresh content and a story line that was moving forward. I think that these players are the ones most likely to return to 8th and the ones we should be actively trying to bring back into the fold. If they were to return, it'd be difficult for GW to ignore the huge potential market available to them!

mottdon fair enough just that comment in that thread seemed to be directed my way if any. I think personally it's okay to talk about AoS - it's naturally part of the landscape of how we interact with 8th edition now. And many of the releases from GW from AoS are great for 8th ed as we've seen with daughters of Khaine and the like. I think to @therealricksalamone point on 9th age I think anti GW sentiment has hurt their model. They are pushing to create their own 'new and entirely separate from GW' game which I think in the long run is a problem. First because they are really using largely GW IP and trying to separate themselves is going to keep GW's lawyers eyes on them, and two because they miss the opportunity to incorporate new GW releases into their game. We've done a good job saying 'that looks cool, lets make rules for it for 8th ed' which I think is a win in the long run.

Yes I find it funny too how much AoS things to be original while it does nothing but pillage ideas from Warhammer: Warhammer skirmish, path to glory, warhammer quest....

when it became evident that 8th was no longer being supported, EVERYONE here quit. fair enough, guess we're lucky at our local club. We've a new recruit, then an old hand returning from 5 years in the wilderness. Friday night gamers currently at 7 but its looking like there could be 10 if people actually turn up when they say. Greg

Greg Oh, that'd be awesome! I'd love to have a local group that large. I've currently got 4 people collecting and playing, but actually finding time to get our games in is rather challenging with our kids being so young. We still plug away at it!

I'm also someone who works pretty hard to grow this forum on social media and have fiercely pushed the EEFL sub event at my GT because I believe in what our community is doing (play the games you love!.) I think the issue is that AOS continues to be a thorn in the communities side. The initial action made so many throw the game away forever. Others turned to new systems. GW seemed to actively to squash WFB community for a while (you would play AOS and like it). All reference to WFB is removed, links to the popular video games lead to AOS, and only the armies they want you to play were authorized. Meanwhile AOS itself is a completely different game that should succeed or fail on its own merits. Except you still get people saying both "Fantasy was killed for this" or "hey WFB players you should play AOS now the X release fixed everything" The games are nothing a like and neither is the fluff. It just happens to use the same models and same names in some occasions. Meanwhile there is a rumor going round that GW paid the people at Adepticon to drop 9th Age from their rotation. And GW is selling old models with GW rules, which is an obvious attempt to lure in former players. This keeps the AOS/GW hate strong. The 9th Age has a different problem in that it was pitched as WFB with different names and has kind of just become a game that uses the WFB engine. In many ways our this is the closest we will probably get to returned WFB even though it is kind of a disappointment now. The other fan mods, (WarhammerCE, Armies Project) both miss the mark by either removing features or not fixing known issues. I kind of like furions system, but it looks like he gave up. 9ths kind of too big as well. Unless you have a group that exists its kind of either 9th or KOW at this point. The result is the community is schizophrenic now. Its no wonder we can't find players. At least all the Necroumunda and Epic players are in one place. And at the end of the day, I would take the rules problems if I could just find a few players to game with now and then.
