So in my playgroup, everyone seems to bring level 4s. (magic is fun)
We also play a lot of games 2000p or lower.
As I play a lot of elite armies its hard for me to justify the points of a level 4.
For instance, with chaos dwarfs, I would rather play 2 level 2s to get more engineering rerolls on my WM.
I heard there is a good math table that explains the difference in levels and that difference in the dispelling is not as big even with 2 levels lower.
Can anyone confirm this or know about the table?

If you're not playing a dirt cheap army where it makes no sense NOT to take a level 4, I don't think taking level 4s is the no-brainer that the internet seems to suggest it is. Perhaps it is my bad luck with miscasts (for my opponents also), but in my experience going overly heavy (reliant) on magic in low level games (sub 2500) is just putting all your eggs in one basket.
Multiple low level wizards has the benefit of spreading the risk of miscasts and also means you don't have to go all out to wrap up your squishy point sink in cotton wool, usually involving spending even more points on magic items or bunker regiments.
I don't have the table unfortunately but I would guess the dispelling is not that different because you generally roll however many dice you need to. The benefit of a level 4 really is getting off more low-dice rolls in terms of casting, which in turn draws out more of the opponents dispel dice.

I agree, yes magic can be game changing but I’ve played games where the magic rolls have been so poor all game, almost nothing was cast (although this more the exception to the rule). I think it’s always worthwhile bringing a level 1/2 with scroll but a level 3/4 is optional. Saying that, I do normally bring one but mainly as I played dwarves exclusively for a number of years so missed out on that phase. In terms of casting if you get off more than 1 spell each turn, you are normally lucky.

It depends on which army I’m using. If I’m playing Empire I like 2 level 2s with different lores. When I play VC/Undead Legion I go for a level 4 Vampire and 2 or 3 Necros (level 1 or 2).

I take a mixture depending on who I'm playing. Against Jerkface's VC I'll take a level 4 as I know he will. I'm happy with a level 3 Slaughter Master with fencer's blades and glittering scales. Hard to wound that guy, and decent magic output. I'll pair him with a level 1 butcher with the Maw lore so the SM can access something more deadly.

I have to go with the old dogma here Lv4, for two reasons: That extra +2 on dispel is pretty critical and the extra two rolls for spells make it a lot more likely that you will get something useful to cast. Would love to see that table though so I can change my mind.

Honestly, in my experience, any game above say 1500pt is lvl 4 with maybe a lvl 1 scroll caddy, if need be. Under 1500pts is lvl 2.

Hmm, the only math table I have seen in this regard was for runesmiths. In most friendly games, we usually stick to the 6th edition rules for unit selection. So, that precludes a Lord below 2000 points anyway.

Druchii.net used to love its maths, but the closest I could find there was this: www.druchii.net/viewtopic.php?t=65664 - the probabilities of meeting a casting value (taking into account the chance of irresistible force) with a certain number of dice. With a bit more work you could compare dispeling chances for Lvl 2s/4s. So much is dependent on your meta, though. A lot of people take Level 4s automatically in any decent sized game, simply because they assume their opponents will too. Also, your army... VCs need a level 4, but plenty of armies are more than capable with less. Give it a go with your Chaos Dwarves!

I like the level 4's (or 3's) because of that sweet 100 point item allowance. CD's at least get a 75 pt allowance on their heroes so it's not so bad.
