I’ve been working on my own update for the Dogs of War/regiments of renown for use within my club. I really like some of the design decisions done by Mathias in his excellent Dogs of War army list, but I also wanted to tinker a bit with my own ideas. This was the first foray of that list using ny mostly painted regiments of renown. I didn’t take a lot of notes, so it’ll be a summary of the battle with the pictures I managed to take before things got too hectic. Dogs of war Leopolds leopard company Riccos Republican guard Marksmen of miragliano Al muktars desert dogs Bronzinos Galloper Gun Golgfag s ogres Mercenary cannon Mercenary wizard lord (Metal) signature, 1, 5, 6 Ogre paymaster (one of the additions I have in my updated list) Dwarves Big block of longbeards Big block of hammerers Irondrakes Quarrelers Cannon Grudge thrower Bsb Lord Runesmith We played a pitched battle, as this was a play test. The mercenaries deployed with an attempt to deny a flank, using Golgfag to anchor the end and the galloper gun in support. Al muktar was ambushing. The dwarves castled up on my faced flank with warmachines between combat blocks. Dogs of war got turn 1 and we were off! Turn 1 saw little from the dogs. Golgfag has vanguarded up and held the center ( going around to hill to avoid the cannon) while the galloper took a march to get better shots turn 2. My normal cannon misfired while the dwarves shut down my magic really hard. The dwarves themselves returned heavy fire, landing a perfect hit on the leopard company with the grudge thrower and the quarrelers killing some of Riccos men. While the combat blocks were content to sit and watch.

Turn 2 the dogs started a general advance. Golgfag troop marched up and took the edge of the forest to get some cover from the irondrakes. Al Muktar showed up in the dwarves backline. The magic phase looked like it was going to be another dud, as I only had 5 dice to the dwarves 6 ( they kept stealing dice). Both debuffs were stopped by the dwarves. Shooting was miserable, the galloper gun lined up a perfect shot and misfired, losing this AND its next shot. On the other side, the standard cannon fired successfully, but misfired on the bounce. The dwarves finally started to march forward towards my pikes. Their shooting was much less effective this turn, missing with their artillery and only wounding a single ogre and some pikes with bs shooting. However, grapeshot killed all the r&f in my fast cavalry unit. They held, but I was starting to get angry at my own shooting failures compared to his middling success at this point.

That anger really showed up in turn 3. The cavalry charged the cannon while the ogres failed a charge against the irondrakes. In the magic phase though, I threw all my dice at a final transmutation on the hammerers, eating 9 of them and narrowly failing to aurify the bsb (granted him a ward save erroneously.) it wasn’t enough for them to break ranks, but it did make me feel better. Especially since I had another terrible shooting phase, successfully killing 1 longbeard with my cannon. In combat, al Muktar managed to break the warmachine crew, but not before losing poor blind ibn to the dwarves hatchets. Dwarf turn three had another slow advance and missed catapult shot. At this point his quarrelers were shooting at, but failing to wound my republican guard, with a similar situation between the irondrakes and the ogres. Sadly I stopped taking pictures around this point. Our lines really met in turn 4. Golgfag stomped the irondrakes into oblivion during my turn, but the champion survived and held on double ones only to get crushed in the dwarf turn. Al Muktar and bronzino killed the grudge thrower crew and my cannons continued to suck. Magic was going to be huge, with 12 dice, but despite killing a good chunk more of longbeards with transmutation, I failed my second spell with a bunch of 1’s and ended early. This was really not a lucky day for me. The hammerers hit the leopard company hard and the dwarf lord called out a challenge to anyone brave enough or foolish enough to face him. Leopold got one good shot with his pistol before being decapitated. The pikes killed a few dwarves but took 9 casualties in return. Thankfully, steadfast kept my in combat for another round. Turn five had the ogres charge the rear of the hammerers. Impact hits and attacks killed the rest of them, and the characters couldn’t kill enough pikemen to overcome the massive combat res- they broke and were run down. The long beards were able to charge and break the republican guard with few casualties, but at this point the battle had been decided, a strong Victory for the mercenaries!

So, a few things to comment on.
Rules: I tried to keep the character of regiments of renown as close to the original as possible, but units like Golgfags are using updated rules. Essentially, these are golgfags man eaters from 8th Edition, and I managed to roll up 100 points of magic items. In this case- having a named standard bearer, an ogre paymaster and Golgfag in the unit meant that wound distribution was all over the place, there were only 2 rank and file models in a unit of 5! This meant Golgfag with the tricksters helm could tank all kinds of shots and reduce damage to the unit. This is a consequence of treating all names models as characters and is something I am altering for version 2 of my rules, in that named models are still characters but follow normal unit wound allocation to avoid such shenanigans.
Artillery was a total bust for me. Stuck cannonballs, misfires and bad bounces meant I only really killed 2 models between 2 guns. Having said that, the galloper gun is one of the most fun models I have ever played with. Running and gunning with that bad boy was an exceptional experience.
Pikes were easily outmatches by dwarven infantry, but using the rules from 6th edition (fight in 2 extra ranks/asf in the first round) really let them punch a bit higher than normal for humans, and I’m really happy with how they function.
Hopefully after a few more games I’ll be in a spot to post the rules that I’m using for this army for you all to review. If anyone would like to see the work in progress, I’ll be happy to DM you!

good stuff! I can relate to forgetting to take pictures when the battle heats up. It's a good sign, means you were really into it. I'd be interested in reading your DoW rules, the warhammer armies project has brilliant presentation but I found some of the rules and text a bit lacking (looked at Chaos Dwarfs and DoW so far).
Don't hold it against me, but or me the named characters are actually the least exciting part of DoW. I like the look of pikemen regiments and I like the different races coming together (like in the Empire of old) so interested to see what you cooked up in that regard.

Well Naitsabes, I included a whole section on generic mercenary units right at the front, so maybe this will be something you're interested in?!
Here is my latest version. I wont be updating the one linked here, as Im constantly tweaking, updating, and adding things. But this should give a static window into what I am doing and have done so far. If you have any comments or suggestions, I would be happy to hear them!
My next game with the army should be this Sunday, and I plan on taking a very different list than the one I used here. Hopefully everything works as intended, as my opponent is a literal lawyer, and can get real specific on my wording!

Quality stuff, I’m also looking forward to seeing your rules (there was no link on your above post - unless it was amended in the time it took for me to respond!). I also understand the lack of photos, I often do the same. Start with loads and gradually forget them going on!

I’ve got another game lined up with them for Sunday!! They won’t be nearly as pretty though, since I’m playtesting I’ll be using unpainted models, I hope you’ll forgive the transgression!
