Thanks and yeah, all of my current banners are indeed freehand - although I've given some consideration for first drawing the flags in larger size, coloring them with Promarker pens, scanning them and printing them in a smaller suitable size for a banner. And how? Well, I guess just drawing a lot and also spending way too much time on single minis And speaking of larger sized drawings, in case someone wants to print this one as a flag, feel free - after all, it's not like the Blanchian Sun would exactly be my original design...

I'm loving it! It's really keeping true to the "old school" feel for Warhammer. It's really nice to see this style reemerge.

Amazing freehand banners. They harken back to when I first got into Fantasy.
Very characterful army.

Cheers all for comments! I started the hobby around 3rd edition in the late 80's, so I was definitely influenced by John Blanche and other artists' imagery back then of what unit banners etc. looked like. Hence I was rather disappointed when GW later went with "me big fist orc only can paint glyph" look with Greenskins... And speaking of those old flags, I'm planning to incorporate this one (or something very similar) for some unit - or even as BSB:

Those banner look awesome.
So what is the banner process? Draw on paper. Scan Print smaller Paint with acrylics on paper? Glue paper on banner? Fix paper edges?

Well I've had basically four different processes, in order of what I've tried first:
- oldschool: (f.ex. flaming moon in the background) is just draw with pencil on paper, colour it with Citadel/Vallejo paints, cut it out and glue to some pole
- middle school: free hand on plastic banners (black orcs above), usually with a quick pencil sketch on them first
- high school: draw/copy-paste some images on computer and then print them out on normal or decal paper (see gobbo shields)
- new school: draw on paper with pencil and/or ink, colour with Promarker pens, scan and print to a smaller size (the sun) with possibly using acrylics for larger surfaces or getting some color exactly the same as on unit minis
I'd really like to do more plastic banners, but there is only a limited number of different designs and there are a *lot* of banners in an O&G army...

Now for a slight detour from painting as I got increasingly annoyed trying to fit models to ranks in the BO unit, so I had to think of some solution before painting any more models - and especially before fitting them on bases. I originally planned to just use round bases for these, but I didn't like gaps they left between models. I also considered just gluing them on square bases so that they could fit at least on one specific position in the unit in some formation, but then I realized I don't even know yet whether I'm running them 5, 6, or 7 wide (or even in a horde like a mad lad) and I would be in trouble again if I wanted to change the frontage and/or formation. So, in the end I decided to mount some of the more troublesome ones on rotating bases I built out of a normal square base, a round base's top and a paper pin. This was another technique I tried, but I prefer the above one for both looks and simplicity:

A rotating base to help with ranking up? ingenious madness!
Don't the other lads make fun of the black orcs with their shiny red shoes? I guess a black orc knows how to put a stop to that.

The rotating base is an awesome idea. Never seen that before. #warhammerhacks

Next up, the unit (not counting Fanatics & similar) with one of the worst "painting time vs. time alive in a battle" ratios in the game, i.e. the Wolf Riders:

If WFB was still in the loop I could see a bits service selling those rotating bases. What an idea! Lovely greenskins - the wolf riders especially. Haven't seen the 4th ed wolfriders on modern wolves before, they're a great match. I was considering kitbashing some but in the end I just pushed through with the "lovely" official plastics. Looking forward to new additions and more of your pretty banners.
