Hi all,
I've been working on a list that fields 2 Thanes. One as a BSB, and the other as the general. I'm thinking also of fielding them in two different blocks. One goes with the Ironbreakers (perhaps with a Oath Stone?), the other with the Longbeards (Oath Stone too?)
I'm curious as to your preferred rune combos for a TANK THANE GENERAL and a KILLY THANE GENERAL.
Let the conversation.... BEGIN!

What size game are you building for? I like using a thane as a general in less than 2000pts as they're as tanky naturally as some other armies' generals.
Personally with the oath stone, I dont tend to put one on a BSB as I think you have to accept challenges with them.

Yes, you have to accept challenges. With the Banner of Grungi, you get a 4+ ward though, so he can be somewhat survivable.
I usually play at 2500. I was debating between a Thane general or a lord general (but I don't have "on shieldbearers" model, so it would have to be lord on foot vs thane on foot.

How many points do you want to put in each? I’ve always been a fan of the MRo Gromril and a Ro Iron for a 1+ save and the extra wound for 50pts (and a great weapon for offence). I’ve seen the 1+ save and 4++ Ward taken too for 75pts (again with the GW). I suppose that is the most Tanky option.

I like those!
I was also thinking of something like: shield, rune of stone, rune of iron, and 5++ or 4+ ward.

3x Ro Warding (4++), Ro Iron (+1 W) & Ro Stone (+1 AS) and load up on mundane armour (2+ AS if you take a shield and no GW) is probably your best bet.
Or you could go MRo Gromril (1+ AS) along with either 2x Ro Iron (+1 W, +1 T) or 3x Ro Warding (4++)
For offense it kind of depends if you know who you're fighting. Because Dwarf I is generally quite low I am usually tempted to tank up and hit back with Great Weapons. If you are set on a fighty rune combo I would go with Ro Might (double S against T5+) then build a combo of Ro Fury (+1 A), Ro Striking (+1 WS) and MRo Swiftness (ASF) depending on personal preference. If you want a touch more durability you can take the Rune of Parrying for -1 to hit. 2x Runes of Cleaving are not so bad either for +1 S and Armour Piercing but I usually look elsewhere.
