I like the idea of this unit, does anyone have any experience of using them in 8th? Min unit size is 10, given how expensive the old metal models are to get I'd not want to go to far beyond this. I currently only have 5 squigs and three herders.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts!
Phil

Squig Herds are lethal in 8th, but you really need to go big or go home. If you really want to use them as a small unit the only real option is to use the (slightly dirt) Squig darts, where you are really just trying to make use of the Squigs Go Wild rule and blow the unit up by putting only the Goblins into combat, with the idea of being broken/killed and the Squigs exploding. Otherwise I suggest patience picking up Squigs as you can (you want max Squigs and min Night Goblins) and a nice big unit filler (Ie in a horde, you want 30 Squigs and 10 Night Goblins - the maximum Squigs:Goblins permitted)

So why with a unit like cave squigs do you needs lots of them? Is it so you have more ranks than the enemy for steadfast? Sorry, still a noob, lockdown has prevented me having an actual game for a year nearly! Damn virus.

Squigs have no armour and low toughness, yet hit like a ton of bricks at S5 with 2 attacks. With lots of squigs you can take casualties and still cause lots of pain, plus the more squigs you have, the greater the Squigs go wild effect

Squig Herds are a really good unit for the goblins.
I like to field them in units of 25 (15 squids, 10 goblins) or a big horde of 50 (30 squids, 20 gobbos).

Anyone have any experience with Kromlech Gnaws? They seem like a reasonable alternative.

I was considering casting my own Squigs. They are very simple models and I reckon you could crack them out with some Oyumaru/Blue Stuff/Silicone Lego moulds + Green Stuff/Milliput pretty easily. I just nabbed some cheap ones in the end

Nobody suggesting the plastic squig herd? With some care they rank up nicely, add much more variation to the metal models, and are not that expensive.

I have so many squigs, I love them to death.
I do love the 30 squig + 10 goblin horde.
Lately I've been playing with the 'Squig Herd Commandos', units of 10, 9 goblins and 1 Squig.
These units provide a screen of hard cover in front of my line, and because shots are randomised 1-4 on squigs, units don't like shooting them because 2/3rds of their shots hit 1 model.
The units are immune to pysch so they can take 9 wounds from shooting/magic while they run forward, trying to get near small units like weapons teams, or skink clouds, or war machines before they blow up.
For 35 points they are amongst cheapest units, and totally disposable

I grabbed a few boxes of the plastic ones, and plan on running 30 Squigs and 10 Herders. It looks like it will play great on paper, hopefully I can get them in a game this month.
40 S5 attacks at WS4 in a horde? And only 270 points? Seems like a good deal to me!
I'm interested in exploring this squig dart too!

So I ended up using the squig herd a week or two ago, and it was nasty! They finished off an OK Stonehorn, a 6 man Unit of Ogres, and ran into some Mournfang before my opponent conceded. At the end I still had half of them left, and they were still a threat. For the points, they are fantastic!
Modeling wise, the squigs are a pain to rank up, front to back. I'm going to elevate rear ranks so their squig faces are over the tails of the ones in front of them.
