Hi all, Can I put a hero into an ambushing unit & retain the 'ambushers' rule? Specifically, I have Dwarf Miners that I want to put a Thane into... Cheers all

You can, if the Hero also has the Ambushers special rule. Otherwise, no. Here is one we prepared earlier.

Thanks Fvon, I figured that might be the case!

Actually I checked this with GW staff back when we could play 8th and was wondering about placing an elf captain in a unit of glade riders, they said yes you can place a character in a unit with the ambushers rule however that unit will lose that rule. If people are funny with that then just check beforehand or don't place the character in the unit.

Surely you *can't* place a character with the unit because characters are deployed last and the unit is never on the table to enable to character to be placed with them

What sonofkurnos says. The advice of GW staff is notoriously unreliable. As pointed out in the linked thread, the Ambushers deployment special rule is mandatory, not optional. That said, if you and your opponent can agree, feel free to play it differently.

On a side note: that is also true for Scouts, which are deployed after all other non-Scout units (including characters), but not for Vanguard units.

What about in missions where you are allowed to place characters in units before you roll to see which side of the table they will deploy on?

I suppose there is a point there, the answer I got was that in doing this I would end up cancelling out ambushing so it was a risk I took, which in the battle ended up going bad for me so I wouldn't advise doing this.

What about in missions where you are allowed to place characters in units before you roll to see which side of the table they will deploy on? As always, normal rules apply, unless specifically stated otherwise. Various scenarios have specific deployment rules, that may have stated deviations from the normal rules. For instance, the Dawn Attack scenario specifies (BRB p.145): "The player that won the roll off must deploy his entire army first. Before deploying each unit, roll a dice and refer to the Deployment table to see where the unit must deploy — this represents them groggily making their way to the battlefield in the darkness just before dawn breaks. Units with the Scouts special rule do not roll on the table, and deploy using their own special rules after normal deployment is complete. Characters may either deploy on their own, rolling on the table like any other unit, or deploy as part of a unit they are allowed to join (state that the character will join the unit before rolling to see where the unit and character will deploy)."

oldmandan : The point is that it is simply impossible to deploy a non-Ambushers/non-Scouts character in a Ambushers/Scouts unit, whatever the GW staff says. You first deploy non-Scouts units, and all non-Scouts characters are deployed last and in one turn. If any characters are to be deployed in a unit, it can only be in a unit that has already been deployed. So, it simply cannot be a Scouts or Ambushers unit, since Scouts are deployed after all other units (including characters) have been deployed, and units with the mandatory Ambushers special rule are not deployed in the deployment phase at all. That is the difference with Vanguard. Vanguard units are deployed before characters and Scouts, but the Vanguard special rule only comes into play after deployment. Hence, you can deploy a non-Vanguard character in a Vanguard unit, at which point the use of the Vanguard special rule will be lost.

Perhaps you don't realise this but I am fully aware of the rules as I use them often as I play wood elves. In this case with regards to what I did I was not using this forum at the time and I was very fortunate to have a very very knowledgeable and experienced person running my local GW which as noted is not something everyone has. This is why I asked him in the first place. However, it is exceptionally rude to patronise someone and repeating the rules over and over again is exceptionally patronising this is the third time you have done this and it is not appropriate behaviour. This forum is for sharing knowledge and experience to help support players with their queries so they can better make informed decisions.

This forum is for sharing knowledge and experience to help support players with their queries so they can better make informed decisions. I'd say you clearly aren't aware of the rules, as you were playing them very incorrectly. As was the very experienced staff member you spoke to. I'm sure the advice has only been reiterated to you, as you seemed to be 'arguing your point' about why your situation was right when it wasn't. It's equally unpleasant to fly off the handle as you have here and there are much better, and more appropriate ways to raise concerns about someone's behaviours or to signify you aren't happy with how someone has replied to you beyond throwing out baseless accusations. From just a cursory glance at the forum you can see that the member you are replying to is well respected, and has an impeccable knowledge of the rules. they offer not only quick responses to rules questions but also page references of where to find the rules, as they have done here. Perhaps you'd had a bad day when you replied like this and might want to edit it to remove?
