Hey I am close to starting a skaven army now, but I need some help for the viability of some units and general list advice. And as a fairly new 8th edition player with only a few games under his belt as Bretonnia, I need a little help. Planning to pick up the Skaven Christmas box and would like some thoughts from you guys. It comes with a Screaming bell/ plague furnace, 3 stormfiends, 40x clanrats and 40x plague monks. And I will pick up Ikit Claw as a kit. I have been looking at some lists and I put something together as a somewhat rough sketch (2000points): - Ikit claw
- Chieftain BSB with shield
- Plague priest with Plague furnace
- Warlock engineer with Doomrocket
Core - 30x clanrats with musican + standard
- 20x skavenslaves
- 32x Stormvermin (Full command + warpfire thrower)
Special - 35x plague monks
- 5x Poinsoned wind globadiers
Rare 1) How viable is Ikit Claw as a lord option? He seems expensive (395p) but I honestly do like the look of his abilities and his lore. But it seems most lists use a combination of Grey seers and Warlords. Perhaps queek headtaker instead? We play in big multiplayer FFA matches for the chaos often. 2) Should I build a plague furnace or the screaming bell? Most people seem to run a grey Seer on the screaming bell, but it seems the furnace would be great considering how many monks I get. 3) Should I use something else instead of the Stormfiends? We play fairly casual in my group. From reading, stormfiends seem to be a subject of great debate around their powerlevel and fairness. And I am a little confused around End times units vs 8th edition as a whole.

More importantly, how much do you like painting rats? If you find it a chore painting that list will be an absolute bear... (This comes from my experience, Skaven was my FIRST army and it took forever to get a list painted.)
1: Grey Seers generally deliver more for the points, but Ikit can be fun in a more casual battle.
2: If possible, magnetize so you can switch back and forth. Unless you're planning on running a Two Towers list you'll only need one or the other. Both are viable, but suit different army builds.
3) Stormfiends seemed to be big in the meta when they dropped, but I didn't get any and therefore haven't gotten a chance to use them.

If you like Ikit Claw, I'd so go for it. He's fun to play with and he has a little of everything - he's a good magic users, he has powerful shooting attacks, he is even decent in combat and has nice armour/ward save. His versatility is what makes him powerful - he can do something extremely useful in all the phases of the game.

Hmm allright Vulcan, that is definetly a worry for me too. Kinda scared of the massive amount of rats I have to paint. I enjoy painting, but it might be a killer. I am mostly for the whole tech and chaos part of skaven, just don't quite know how to cut down on the amount of bodies and bring more of the tech toys. But it might be a much better route for me. Perhaps some rattling guns, and filling the hordes with poisoned wind mortars might be a better approach. That is great to hear, I will definitely try to make him work in a list then!

Skaven works best with large numbers. An elite army will go through them by the dozens, if not the score, per turn. You need the bodies to keep the elites busy while you go about winning the battle. If you go with a medium number of technological terror toys, the elites rip through you before you can win.

Stormfiends are very powerful for the points but thematically fit in perfectly with Ikit Claw so no one should complain. Especially with only 3.
Plague furnace simply because you have the unit of monks to go with it. Both look cool and are effective in game.

Well guys, thanks for all your help. I decided to take the plunge after a month of backtracking back and forth on wanting to do this project. I haven't told my playgroup yet, and I think I am going to keep it secret until I have it all ready and then surprise them on one of our big family brawl days, though it will be far in the future before my skaven are ready. And a lot of rule reading to know how I am going to set up my army the best way against our 5-man FFA.

make sure you post pictures of the army as it progresses and then a report of the battle itself

I would maybe find a way to fit a warplightning cannon in there. The doomwheel is definitely a very good thematic choice for an Ikit based army.

As someone who painted up a ~2000 point Skaven force this past year, look for speed paint guides on YouTube. There are quite a few, each with their own approaches. They really helped me with the sheer model count for Skaven armies.

Might prime in fur brown from Army painter to ease things up.
