Great to see that the good old world is being preserved somewhere in a parallel universe. I've loved the traditional version of the game since I was a tween (although didn't fully understand it). Now I've been painting models and assembling new army lists. I decided to go 1000 point armies because let's face it I don't have all day.
Defenders
2x12 archers 6x2 with musicians
18 Phoenix guard 6x3 with full command and razor standard 10 white lions 5x2 with musician and guardian
Archmage lvl4 with dispel scroll and lore of life
20pts left magic items
Strat: mage bunkers in with one archer regiment, Phoenix guard sit back and absorb the charge while the white lions hold off any flankers. Would not use this against another ranged army.
Concerns: too small model count. No chaff.
Options: when facing a magic heavy army if switch the razor banner for the banner of the world dragon. Swap one regiment of archers for Reavers with bows AND spears to deal with an annoying enemy backline.
Assault
8 Silver helms 4x2 with musician 5 reavers 5x1 with bows only
18 Phoenix guard 6x3 with full command and razor standard 10 white lions 5x2 with musician and guardian
Archmage lvl4 with dispel scroll and the lore of life
Strat: silver helms flank ranged or poorly armored units. Reavers harass war machines or other backline. Mage bunkers in with the phoenix guard that slowly advances waiting to drop the anvil. White lions are the hammer to help tear through the front line.
Concerns: units too spread out. Low model count.
Let me know what you think. I'm just doing this for fun. Keep in mind although I played this game years ago I'm still basically a noob.

An archmage seems a bit too much voor this small a game. Level 2 is enough.Perhaps high magic for the magic misile and to make the Phoenix Guards 3+ ? No bsb is a risk but might work. You are playing msu, cool. I would take one large white lion unit but small units can work too. Perhaps an eagle as chaff?

agree on the Lv4 overkill. if you want to go that route, you could at least drop the dispel scroll. in the first list that'll give you 40 pts to play with. find 10 more and you can get the all important eagle.

I prefer the first list as a full foot force as it's more thematic.
It also has a lot more wounds even though it doesn't have the saves.
I kinda agree with the others on the Archmage being powerful for 1000 points but maybe the magic domination would be a good thing.
I think if you are going the Archmage route though that as he is your general and squishy maybe drop the scroll for a 4+ ward save (you need 5 more points)
Out of curiosity which spells are you really hoping for?
One weakness is the lack of strength baring the white lions. A 70 point bolt thrower would help a lot if you could squeeze it in somehow.
If i had a high toughness monster against the list for example I'd try to take out the White Lions first then let it rampage around.
Seems like a fun 2 lists to play that you have come up with, good luck.

Btw. Welcome to the forum.
Also for 1000 points the Phoenix guard unit with razor banner is quite fearsome.

I like both lists.
My only rec is to drop the Archmage altogether and replace him with a Loremaster of Hoeth.
Your Archmage with upgrade and scroll is 245. The Loremaster is 230 with heavy armour and great weapon, as well as being a level 2 wizard and knowing 8 spells! You then have 35 points left over for magic items.

Actually a Loremaster has 8 spells with lots of magic missiles, can heal himself and give himself a ward save, has armour and a strong weapon. Good idea. Finding points for an eagle with him will be hard though.

Hey thanks all for the great suggestions.
To answer a question above I'm planning to use my lvl 4 life mage for is the flesh to stone spell as the centerpiece of my magic. Bolstering the elves toughness, especially the white lions, can really help in crunch time.
The lore master is a great alternative that I didn't consider. I like the lore of high magic a lot mostly for the ward save buff. Sticking him in with the Phoenix guard even on defense can be a solid move to keep my best unit around.
Adding an eagle to the squad is also another great option to mix it up with some chaff. I can adjust here and there to make that happen.
I feel that MSU is a solid strat.
Working on a 2000 pt list to be posted later on.

More stuff:
An army with a large monster could be countered by a bolt thrower if needed but I wouldn't implement it unless I had to.
Also the #x# indicates the unit formation not the unit size. Probably won't be considered MSU but it's still viable strat just not for my list.

I'd say beware of designing strategy behind magic. If you fight against an army with good anti-magic, such as Dwarfs, your entire magic phase could be shutdown leaving your expensive Mage useless. With the Loremaster, even if his magic fails, his fighting ability will still be useful.
