Unit of 6 knights + character charged by chariot triggering impact hits, which cause 7 wounds. I think the knights are wiped out, but that the character does not suffer the extra wound.
Firstly is that right and if it is, assuming no other damage or modifiers is the combat resolution 7 or 8 (including +1 for charging)
Thanks ππ»

Excessive wounds allocated to Joe troops don't carry over onto characters after all the Joe troops are killed. But wounds from later initiative steps can target the character (ie. attacks from the chariot's crew and horses).
Only wounds actually caused count for combat resolution. So combat resolution seven (six wounds plus one for charging). The exception to this are extra wounds inflicted on a character during a challenge do count for combat resolution (but that has a limit too).

Great, this is exactly how we played it, but I did worry I cheated my opponent out of a point of combat resolution.

That had to be really terrible luck for you to take 7 wounds from a single chariots impact hits. Were these Bret knights?

Hi all, this is interesting.. I always thought that excess wounds caused to the unit in close combat (or indeed shooting) would carry over to the character, just the same as it does for the command group, but I cant find anywhere in the rules that clarify that they don't?

Excess wounds from shooting attacks expressis verbis do not carry over to characters, provided there are five or more rank and file models from the same troop type left in the unit.
BRb p. 99: "'Normal' shooting attacks β by which we mean to say shooting attacks that use the firer's Ballistic Skill β cannot hit a character in a combined unit if there are five or more rank and file models from the same troop type (including musician and standard bearer, but not the champion) left in the unit. We assume that the enemy cannot pick the character out. All hits are allocated onto the unit's rank and file models.
If there are fewer than five rank-and-file models left in the unit (or the character is of a different troop type) there is a chance that any characters in the unit could be hit β the controlling player decides who is hit, but must allocate one hit on each model before he can add a second hit on a model; he must allocate two hits on each model before he can allocate a third, and so on."
The same applies to CC, but that is not as such specifically stated. However, it logically follows from BRB Official Update Version 1.9, p. 11:
Q: At what point after a unit has been wiped out do any characters remaining count as having left the unit? (p101)
A: As soon as the last model from the unit has been removed, any remaining characters will count as a new unit. Note that this will cause Panic tests to all friendly units within 6β (including the newly formed unit of character(s)) as the unit has been destroyed.
Since, once the unit models have been removed, characters left become a new unit, wounds from the old unit cannot carry over.

A Pump Wagon with Giant Explodin' Spores and without the Spiky Rolla WOULD deal 2d6 S4 hits that ignore Armour Saves. 6++ Ward or die.

β the controlling player decides who is hit, but must allocate one hit on each model before he can add a second hit on a modelΒ What does the "controlling player" mean? Is it the one whose turn is (and is shooting) or is it the player who is controlling the unit that got shot and is taking the wounds? Probably the former makes more sense.

The "controlling player" is the player in control of the unit in question, for example:
BRb p. 24: "A unit that has successfully rallied immediately makes a reform manoeuvre, as described on page 14, so that the controlling player can at least get his troops pointed towards the enemy again, rather than the wild blue yonder." BRB p. 26: "Note that if a unit attempts an Enemy Sighted! test and fails, it is still treated as having marched, even if its controlling player then elects not to have the unit move at all." BRB p. 43: "Each wound suffered may be cancelled if the controlling player makes a saving throw."
Note that this is not necessarily the player on whose Army List the unit is. There are a number of circumstances where a player can take control of an enemy unit, in which case he would be the "controlling player."

For some reason I can't wrap my head around this even with your explanation above, because in my mind there are two units in question: 1) Unit doing the hits 2) Unit receiving the hits
Which one decides who are hit?

The controlling player is always the player whose unit is affected. Distributing hits affects the unit that is receiving the hits. Hence, it is the player in control of the receiving unit that decides.
