There's a lot of either/or answers in this thread, when really the question should be "how can I fit as many regular Trolls, River Trolls and Stone Trolls into my army"? KevinC has the answer. That Banner of Eternal Flame can only be in one place at a time. The link isn't working for me on Mobile, I'll try it again later. But what you are saying is certainly true!

I would certainly plump for River Trolls if I had to choose between the two - the -1 to hit them in any melee is much more useful than a 5+ armour save or Magic Resistance (2), both of which only apply in situations that may not always occur (against attacks with Strength 4 or less and against spells respectively). By contrast your Trolls are always going to be getting into melee (unless they decide to be stupid of course ), and the -1 to hit penalty against River Trolls really helps to stack a fight in their favour. Agreed. I also really like the idea of moving through otherwise deployment/movement shattering terrain (River, Marsh) with no concern.

Due to the fact that a MR2 item is 30 points I include a Stone troll in every list because I solo my blorc war boss on a boar.
Essentially making the Stone Troll a second talisman
I kit the blorc with the tricksters helm, 5++ ward, and usually the initiative 10 sword to screw with ASF rerolls, or the sword of might
The Stone troll joins him, so he ends up with Ws7 (&fear) T5 reroll successful wounds 1+ save (thick skin, heavy armour, shield, helm) 5++ ward save 3++ save v spells
Shooting hits are divided between both models (you choose where the first hit lands)
So for 15 extra points the BOWB gains fear and stupidity, 3 attacks (or vomit), stomps, and can catch cannonballs
The biggest downside is not the stupidity, but the loss of swiftstride.
