I think we all know trolls are awesome...but I want to start using some of the Rare variety.
River/Marsh strider and -1 to hit is awesome for the River troll.
5+ Scaly skin is sweet for the stone troll...but the MR seems incredibly situational. It helps with....flame spells? Fireball? MR doesn't add to regen, so what is the point?
Seems to me like River trolls are the way to go. Am I missing anything?

MR doesn't add to regen, but remember flaming attacks (including fireball) remove regeneration, so this would mean you still getting a ward save from that at least..

If we are talking about purely the most cost effective, it's probably the River Troll. The -1 to hit penalty is really good. While the MR 2 and scaly skin 5+ on the Stone Troll can be useful - it's more situational (i.e. fire magic or S3 attacks). I like to use Stone Trolls simply because they are some of my favorite models.

a) They're cheaper. b) They aren't from the rare section.

what about regular trolls? What do they have ? Exactly what badder said, they are 10pts less each and are a Special choice instead of Rare.

Rare is usually quite a congested allocation for O&G, I rarely get to use non-vanilla trolls

I normally take vanilla trolls, but with these points I figured, Why not go rare?

a) They're cheaper. b) They aren't from the rare section. -------Which ultimately makes them the best. I ultimately agree with this… I love River/Stone Trolls, but 10 PPM and Rare for their effects make them semi-misses for me. Stone trolls are cool, but their increase vs. magic is only powerful outside of combat, and their scaly skin rarely makes a difference as I send these guys to deal with heavy hitters that I can vomit on (who typically break through that 5+, and they end up relying on Regen anyways.) River Trolls suffer a similar issue… yes, -1 to hit in Combat is a very powerful effect, but it only improves their survivability in CC (and they still end up relying on the Regen, which regular Trolls have.) Imo, I’d rather just have MORE regular Trolls! 4 standard is 140 points, while 3 Rare Trolls is 135. A unit of 8 Trolls (4x2) I feel will be much more threatening than 6 (3x2) Rare trolls, for only 10 points more. That being said, pick Stone Trolls for the models, and River Trolls for the rules.

There's a lot of either/or answers in this thread, when really the question should be "how can I fit as many regular Trolls, River Trolls and Stone Trolls into my army"? KevinC has the answer. That Banner of Eternal Flame can only be in one place at a time.

I would certainly plump for River Trolls if I had to choose between the two - the -1 to hit them in any melee is much more useful than a 5+ armour save or Magic Resistance (2), both of which only apply in situations that may not always occur (against attacks with Strength 4 or less and against spells respectively). By contrast your Trolls are always going to be getting into melee (unless they decide to be stupid of course ), and the -1 to hit penalty against River Trolls really helps to stack a fight in their favour.
