Tolkien is the founder of all. All the legends already existed but his portrayal of for instance Elves fixed them in place. Even writers such as Sir Terry Pratchett (my n°1 author) explictly do the opposite as Tolkien, thus validating his influence.

Understood. Very adult (read dark) themes but I don't personally think that means he is a better writer (meaning quality of prose, character development, and ability to create memorable art.) Martin's world is complicated and wide spanning but just doesn't resonate for me possibly in part I think because it's so dark that it breaks my desire to temporarily 'live' their as a reader immersing myself in it while reading.
I agree Tolkien is #1.
I do like Jordan (though his body of work is uneven), Eddings (again uneven and teen targeted) as authors who are able to create compelling characters and interesting worlds.
Okay I think this is now an idea for another topic!

Thats what makes it fun, where will this post go! The problem with almost every fantasy writer is the depth of the characters is just not there at all. Everything is black or white, good or bad and so on. Martin is the only author that I have so far read that give the character real life personalities and depth. There is a reason why people act the way they do and everyone can die.

Okay I think this is now an idea for another topic! I was going to start a top 5 books/series thread! But now I'll leave that to you...
