Daemons is my main army, and I love running the greater ones. Recently however I have run a few lists, and written a few more that have no greater daemon, and are perhaps more effective and efficient for it.
To break down the discussion further I would suggest considering the case of each of the four mono-god armies, and then the mix. I think it goes without saying that Epidermis improves all Nurgle units, so leave him out of the equation for now.
So, if you play daemons what do you find more effective (not more fun), and if you like to cleanse the world from the taint of a demonic incursion what do you prefer to face?

I've yet to run a Greater Daemon, and have faired quite well it allows a lot more points to go elsewhere and really work on synergies.

I've used Keeper of Secrets to great effect. I have never run any others yet though. I think the key is getting the mix of gifts right.
KoS have fantastic movement and initiative, so swapping out a bad gift for ASF is a no brainer. They are not quite as killer as they were in 7th (which was impossibly awful to face) but still pretty badass

no daemon prince either?
I've never tried it without a Lord of Change.
edit: coming to think of it, I don't think I even have the models to do that.

Daemon armies just don't seem right without a Greater Daemon in my eyes.
One thing I've done to save points while still including a Greater Daemon in my army, is to run them "naked" - with no upgrades of any kind. A GUO, at least, is viable without upgrades and allows you to build a larger army!

you'd certainly struggle in the magic defense. Already no dispel scroll and now no lord level caster either. sounds like asking for trouble.

KevinC is from the school of magic-isn't-everything The fact DoC are super fast does help mitigate low magic levels a bit. I always would take a lesser gift. Even if you roll something bad, and Dark Blessing (2+ ward against first wound) is probably the worst, you can just take the ASF sword instead. I would probably go 2x lesser 1x greater ideally. One greater is also pretty nice because the gifts are all strong and the default weapon options are pretty awesome too.

In terms of magic resistance and protection I have often run a purely Khorne army - so only MR to protect my poor little red army. I even placed third at a tournament that was quite competitive earning (32 players from all parts of SE England), quite fittingly gaining the prize for the most violent as I had the most vp's. Admittedly I did run two Bloodthirsters and two cannons but still! As a result I quite often do not bother taking a dispel scroll with other armies as having a level 4 for protection seems amazing 😀.

The most violent army? Khorne is proud of you. He careth not who the best overall is. It does sound like a fun list.
