So, can anyone show me where it says that Shields cannot be used with spears? Maybe I'm blind, but I'm totally not seeing this. I've heard plenty of people talking about it though.

you are not seeing it because it's not in the book...
some weapons, e.g. halberd have a special rule 'use with two hands' (or something along those lines). spears do not.

Shields and spears can be used together because spears are NOT "require two hands". Hence one hand for the spear and one hand for the shield.

I believe that you do not get the parry save however, as the rule states that you have to have a hand weapon and shield.

Okay, I thought that they could be used together, but I could swear that I remember us talking about this somewhere recently. I remember thinking at the time, "Well, why would High Elf Spearmen come with shields if they can't use them?" I suppose that not getting a parry save would make sense too, but I'd like to know for sure.

Parry save specifically requires a non magical hand weapon. Which a spear is not by WFB 8th definition.

So what is it? You use one hand.

Pg 88 if a warrior is fighting with a hand weapon and shield he gets a parry save. Doesn't work vs stomps, impact hits on frenzied warriors. Hand weapons cover swords, maces, daggers etc. Other weapons fall under the 'special weapon' category (still page 88). If a warrior is armed with a close combat special weapon it must use that weapon (although magic weapons trump special weapons) - pg 89 From page 90-91 it lists the special weapons (incl spears).
Note I'm obviously not quoting word for word from the brb. Takes too long to do on my phone...

Knoffles has it right hand weapon has a specific and limited definition in 8th Ed. Basically no extra rules. Anything with some extra rules from the basic weapon in 8th is not a hand weapon aNd instead something else.

So is it only parry saves thats removed or do you also remove the 1+ armour? Only parry saves. Armor save for spear/shield is same as for hw/shield. Ie, light armor, shield and spears is 5+ armor save, same as if the spears were hw's.

Ah, okay. That makes sense then. I was wondering what the distinction really was. Well, I guess now I know! (I forget the Parry save about 80% of the time anyway.) Sucks for HE and Skeletons. Lol! Thanks for the clarification, guys. I was hoping that Fidelis would chime in, but I think we chased him away after the General's Leadership thread.

I think we covered this topic well enough without him. But, it'd be nice to have him around for the tougher nuts. Maybe he is still around, watching us, ready to swoop in as needed.

I can understand him taking a bit of a break as he wrote several quite lengthy and detailed posts.
