Sucks for HE and Skeletons. parry save is the same for everyone. Dwsrves get a special rule called shield wall but it amounts to the same thing. I don't have a single spear armed skeleton (on foot) in my entire army, much preferring hand weapon and shield. Greg

Greg HE can't take hand weapons but to be fair we have ASF and basr WS4 so not having a parry is not the end of the world.

Fair enough, wasn't aware you had no HW&S troops but as you mentioned the extra rank makes up for it.

Always thought that rule was dumb... maybe cause I've played historicals, but rest assured you can absolutely parry with a shield while using a spear... I understand the gamist aspect of that rule, but still...

I understand the gamist aspect of that rule, but still... Spears allow an extra rank when charged so I think they don't allow parry to balance that. Who would take sword and board if spear acted the same but got that extra rank. Personally I wish I got parry too lol.

I agree. It's all about game balance in the end.

Faq 1.9
Close Combat Q: Does a model with a shield get the armour save bonus in combat if it can’t use it? For example it is using a weapon that requires two hands? (p43) A: No.

we're talking about spears though, which only require one hand to use IN THEIR RULES; which I think is the difference here.

Yeah, that's in reference to units that have both Great Weapons and Shields (like Hammerers). The shields can provide them with another point of armor protection from shooting attacks, but once they are in close combat, basically, they drop the shields (or strap them on their back) to be able to use their Great Weapons.
Spears don't require the model to drop their shield in order to still use the spear.

I was hoping that Fidelis would chime in, but I think we chased him away after the General's Leadership thread. Ouch. That hurt. Because it implies I cannot be swayed by argument. As it happens I was pre-occupied with a special assigment, and then took some time of leasure. Even my input on warhammer-empire dropped to a minimum. As thers have stated, Spears (BRB p. 91)mdo not have the "Requires two hands" rule, and thus can be combined with spears, even in CC. Regarding parry save, I posted on warhammer-empire some years ago this mnemonic poem: This mnemonic poem may or may not be useful to remember all the parry rules. :icon_wink: Of parry and saves I have come to tell - So listen good and remember it well: To receive the saving ward of a parry An unfrenzied model on foot must carry His trusted hand weapon, simple and plain, With a guarding shield that is just as mundane, But only - alas - in mêlée to the fore; In either the flank or the rear ‘t works no more. If one or both by magic was crafted I fear the parry’s been thoroughly shafted.

I was afraid that we were giving you quite a hard time on that other thread. Many people have left forums for much less. Glad to know that you're still with us though! PS - Love the poem! Makes sense too!
