Hey folks I have a conundrum and I wanted your input.
I recently made a new friend locally, he works a LOT but when he does/can play he's expressed an interest in playing LARGE games; when I say large I mean 20-30,000 points large.
The trouble I'm running into is this: I'm almost done with my 2000 points of skaven, but I'm torn between starting my 2000 points of Dark Elves or making the Skaven list MUCH larger. I have everything the skaven has to offer (yes, even poison wind globadiers and plague censer bearers) so I would hardly be spending any $ (which I like the idea of, as I've been eyeing a new RC car and I would like to save for that; also I'm looking into a 3D printer) for quite a while. I'm wanting some stormfiends; maybe a couple boxes because they're cool.
However I really like the look of Dark Elves and I like the idea of having a small force of them.
What do I do? What would you guys rather see? More Skaven? Or a broader range of smaller forces? I have around 10k of painted Chaos Warriors, but I'm wanting to bring other armies up to similar size too (eventually). Despite all the models I've been painting recently (140 clanrats/slaves + 50 stormvermin + all the smaller support) I'm not burned out on Skaven and would love to paint up a screaming bell, a doomwheel or two, a plague furnace and a unit of plague monks.
But Cold One knights...
Help me break this stalemate! State your cases and help me decide!

I would do both and just flit between them as and when you are bored of painting one or the other But then I have a million unpainted models so who would listen to me?

huge games are super-fun and where 8th edition really shines! I'd say you want to have at least one army to do that properly (although picking Skaven as that one is a bit of a crazy choice). You will also need to invest in extra table space.
as horace said, go back and forth between armies. Do lots more Skaven, then do your Dark Elves, then do lots more Skaven, then do army x, then do lots more Skaven, then do army y, then...well, you get the idea.

Yeah I'm leaning towards doing up a giant unit of plague monks with a furnace/priest immediately following finishing up my 2000 points of skaven. We'll see how I'm feeling after that? Naitsabes while I'm feeling a little masochistic opting for such a large skaven army; if I go the End Time route and allow my Beastmen, WoC, and Skaven to ally together I'm picturing how epic 30,000 points of a painted Chaos horde would look. I've perfected batch painting of clanrats/slaves I feel - I can do 20 in a week when I'm on point with little effort (mostly just drybrushing/inking). And he's an empire/Tomb Kings/lizardmen/Ogre player so we even have the good/bad forces sorted! Apparently his last game of 8th was three years ago and the guy he played with moved to Saudi Arabia. Their game lasted four days and was 80,000 points.

I think you can have 2 bad guy allies for your ultimate big game. Skaven and DE aren’t unreasonable, though rats and warriors makes a bit more sense. Sounds like a good problem to have.

I'll try and get him to sign up here too; hopefully he'll be able and willing to contribute here to the forum!

If I were in your shoes, I'd probably work on painting up your Skaven, pushing toward that 30K mark, but while you do that, spend your hobby money on DE models and build up your force there. I'll take you some time to paint up 30K worth of Skaven, and in the time it takes you to get them all painted, you could build up a sizable DE force. Whenever you get burnt out on painting that many Skaven (and you will), paint up the random DE model. It'll keep you fresh, motivated and excited about what is to come. It would be really good to have a sizable Skaven force all painted up though.

Skaven from what you posted.
You still 'want' to paint Skaven more than Dark Elves it seems.

If it wasn't for meeting this new friend, which would you be more interested in: a larger Skaven force or a Dark Elves force? I would focus on which army you are genuinely most interested in.
You could always play super large games using allied armies! Dark Elves + Skaven sounds like fun.

Honestly, an allied Skaven and DE army sounds terrifying! An elite, killy army with wave after wave of cannon fodder? Dang.

Honestly, an allied Skaven and DE army sounds terrifying! An elite, killy army with wave after wave of cannon fodder? Dang. It would definitely be potent! Perhaps not as bad as a anti-magic Dwarf gunline + WoC combat army. Or what about a Beastman + Tomb Kings combo?!

On an unhelpful note, all this post title has done is put a song by a certain Aussie ex-soap actress in my head. Being more helpful, coldone knights are some of the best looking models GW has made. I have 2 boxes in my cupboard (unopened of course). They are the one reason I nearly started a DE army. But as the others said , there is nothing to stop you slow building DE while further building the skaven. Also 3k is a good number as gives you options for switching up your army list

coldone knights are some of the best looking models GW has made. Almost as nice as the Lizardmen variants. I love those DE cold ones. The Witch Elves are phenomenal sculpts as well.

Yeah totally understand the obsession with cold one knights. I have it too... Have 3 boxes of unpainted halfway assembled pulling me for doing DE next... I even bought a painted army where he had left cold ones and some riders unpainted and I thought it was worth more because of it . I would mix up the painting. You don't want to run into the painting wall. Nothing beats painting sculpts you genuine like.
