I appreciate that there are specific forums for 40k but I just don't have time to drive all over town with my questions. Gary and some of you other guys have a nice working knowledge of 40k so here we go.
With a box of shiny new Centurions, I need advice on how to assemble them. I am fairly certain that i DO NOT want them assembled as assault centurions. That then leaves me with: heavy bolters, lascannons, grav cannon, and bolter v. missile in the chest mount.
My standard army build is:
Imperial/Crimson Fist Doctrine
Pedro
Primaris Lieutenant
Librarian
Captain with PF and or Terminator Captain teleporting in with hammer and shield (Lysander kit).
Primaris Apothecary
Honor Guard (for Pedro)
5 or 6 Reivers (grav chutes)
Melta Dread
Redemptor Dread
5 or 6 Intercessors
10 Tac, fist, plasma, multimelta
10 Tac, fist, plasma, plasma cannon
5 Tac, heavy bolter
7 scouts
Las Predator
Sometimes a standard Land Raider
Thunderfire cannon
7 Assault marines on foot, fist, plasma pistol
Typhoon Land Speeder
Rhino with HK missile
I don't play a ton of games but most of them are against terminators, tanks, walkers, and Primarchs. Also my son uses this force against my growing Death Guard army.
Thoughts:
Before I start, Pedro allows rerolls of all hits so I plan to add the centurions to the mass that clusters around him. My usual tactic involves clumping my troops around Pedro and the Lieutenant to gain crazy rerolls. I want to maximize the output of these expensive troops with reroll on demand.
1) Go with heavy bolters and chest (hurricane?) bolters and make use of the Bolter Drill strategem (1CP allows hits of 6 an additional shot). That's 18 HB shots and 18/54 bolter shots depending on range. By sheer volume I should be able to force tons of armor saves.
2) Go Lascannon/missile and own the anti-tank battle. 6 lascannons appear awesome, especially with the rerolls. Add in the d3 missiles in the chest mount for even more punch.
3) Go grav cannons and just field the unit against terminator-heavy and power armored friends.
4) Mix it up and do 2 with heavy bolters and one as a dedicated tank hunter with the las/missiles.
I think the lascannon guys look weird and I think the heavy bolters look best, if that's worth anything.
Bolter storm seems most fluffy for fists.
