Alright guys played a game last Tuesday; 7500 points. Apologize for the tardiness of the battle report wilsonthenarc but 4th of July, a fishing trip, and family obligations got in the way this weekend and I've been unable to get around to summarizing this post.
Here's what my army looked like:
Here's the initial setup; we played on a 4x8 table as the other 10' of his table was taken up by his guard army that he had out on display (yes, he has that many guardsmen):
Not going to go into too much detail but I will summarize some highlights of the game:
Magic phases were a bit weak all game, to the point that we weren't impressed with the 4D6 magic at all - these rolls were typical all game. We found that we typically ended up with an average of 10-11 power dice with our opponent having around 8 dispel dice. This led to most of our magic phases being pretty uneventful.
Here's some maneuvering shots prior to the actual clash of combat:
Highlights:
BOTH Hellcannons misfired first turn - One fired a mega shot that obliterated the casket of souls. The other one ate all it's crew.
The last charge of the Dragon Ogres - they destroyed a sphinx construct (don't remember the type, I think it's the one with a howdah that has the tomb guard crew) overrun to within an inch of the great weapon toting Ushabti. They're consequently charged by the Ushabti and cut to pieces with the help of some magic assistance, but not before I kill the hatred giving character that's in the unit with them.
General advance up the center:
(Necro?)sphinx charges a warshrine after it had charged Apophis. This combat would go on for quite a while as warshrines offensive capability is next to nil whilst it's defensive capability is stupid high (T5, 4W, 4+/3++)
Marauders fight a summoned unit of skeletons with a howdasphinx - combat resolution saw to the demise of both these units; with the help of my new favorite character, Ima gonna call him...Patrick, emperor slayer. (helm of many eyes, hellfire sword - this is the guy that killed Karl Franz in a single combat phase during our last mega-game)
Sphinx charges some chaos knights. Knights eventually grind it down but they take a casualty in the process
I managed to get a unit of marauder horse in his backfield but was unable to capitalize on the opportunity because I had already killed his casket of souls and there were no squishy targets for them to shoot at. Instead they became a source of consternation all game as my opponent dedicated a summoned unit of carrion and skeleton horse archers to killing them.
Trolls make combat around turn 4 as they spent the first two turns failing stupidity. They promptly failed a fear check though and were hitting on 5's... (I rolled a lot of 11's and 12's for LD this game - had a chariot flee from a sphinx, even the chaos knights failed a check once. The only place I never failed was the center thanks to my general and bsb, although I rolled a few 10's and even had to use that reroll a couple times on that 10.) Here they've just killed a sphinx and have reformed - with the added help of a chariot and the trolls the warshrine has managed to defeat Apophis and the sphinx it was fighting.
We square up for the final confrontation in the center:
Lots of action on the right flank:
AHW warriors charge some skeleton horsemen and grind them down over a few turns. The chimera and a (dead by now thanks to a tomb king) chariot charge the skeleton spears. The chimera eventually kills the tomb king but is killed in return by the spears from the skeletons.
In a bout of bad and good luck for me (the rock prevented my horsemen from redirecting as I hoped they would; the horse had to close the door to the chariots which allowed the chariot unit to overrun into the skullcrushers flank - the subsequent combo-charge from chariots saw 19 impact wounds and all those crew and animal attacks cause...two wounds to the crushers I made a LOT of armor saves) the skullcrushers eventually emerge victorious, securing me the right flank. This would be the only major action that occurs on this side of the table.
Trolls finish off the ushabti, but not before taking fearsome casualties (3 + Throgg left at the end of the game)
Center finally crashes together - I win all the combats. In an unexpected turn of events and due to some nice magic assistance (-3T on the chariots!) the sword and board Tzeentch warriors completely blow through the chariots and manage a nice overrun into the skeleton archer bunker unit behind that contains Khalida and the Heirophant.
Chosen continue to kill everything they touch whilst the Marauders only manage to keep winning their combats because of Patrick, emperor slayer single-handedly killing around 6-8 models a turn (he's usually killing 4-5 with his normal attacks and I'm usually rolling a single 6 causing one of the killed models to explode for another 1-2 wounds on the unit)
My general and his general (Khalida) end up in a challenge with each other. I take all but one of her wounds in the first combat phase for no wounds in return - finishing her off in the next round of combat. For those interested my general was a Chaos Lord armed with: sword of might, dragonhelm, talisman of endurance, shield, crown of command, poisonous slime, and soul feeder.
Skeletons eat a charge from a giant and the ahw warriors. After NOT falling down, a jump up and down plus the warriors combat res sees the skeletons quickly dispatched. (chariots were casualties)
The final combat: a unit of Tomb guard facing off against my Marauders. Patrick manages to finally nail down that elusive hatred giving character in the unit and is rewarded by becoming a Daemon Prince! He's earned it in my book he killed a LOT of dudes this game and single-handedly kept the under-performing Marauders in the fight.
All in all it was a fun fight. Next time I'm hoping to bring a large skaven force, even if it's not all painted If you're still with me, thanks for reading this far!
