LoTR was massive for Games Workshop when the original trilogy came out. Even now, while it's got a relatively small following, that's of really dedicated and well-organised fans. They kept the game going even after GW abandoned it around 2013-4, and the strength of that plus the fact that Adam Troke in GW is a massive LoTR fan got the game revived as part of Forge World's specialist games. That success is what gives me hope that perhaps one day old-world ranked wargaming may be revived as part of the specialist games range. I'm not doubting you because I only really have my local area and the internet boards I used to go to as examples, but how big was the game? It seemed like it really lacked any drawing power after maybe the initial release.

I'm kinda in the same boat as roughtimes here as well. Both of the games I saw (right after the initial release) were games that the GW store manager was playing with the set she bought herself. And one of those was against her kid! So not sure that counts...
Anyway, I've never been able to find anyone even remotely interested in getting into it here. Maybe it sells better in Europe? I don't mind if it does well at all, I just haven't ever seen it. I've loved LotR all my life (that was my initial foray into fantasy, and will always the the measuring stick by which all fantasy is measured for me - I even have a huge Anduril hanging in my library/game room) but even this game was hard for me to bite off. I was seriously tempted though.
But, like you sedge, this does give me hope that they will make 8th edition a specialist game, supported by Forge World. But the fact that AoS and 8th use the same models and are so closely linked (especially since as time goes on, AoS's rules keep creeping closer and closer to 8th edition rules...), leads me to believe that it'll never happen. Here's hopin' though.

It wasn't massive (aside from in the early days, when I think it outsold WFB), but the level of dedication from fans is high - they kept regular events and tournaments going even when GW looked to have abandoned them.
I can't really say how big the game is, as I don't know, and I'm not sure how you'd really measure it, but a comparison I'd make is with the Horus Heresy - not in size, but in the way it was collected/played. HH isn't something you come across people playing regularly, but the people who collect it tend to be really dedicated, spending massive amounts of money on their models, and getting really into the background. LoTR works as a fantasy equivalent for Forge World, as while the audience is relatively small, they're the kind of people who will stick with it long-term and spend lots even on expensive FW models.

I can't see 8th ever coming back as a specialist game as long as AOS is alive.
For a while, I was convinced we'd see ninth released as a throwback or anniversary edition. But the round base thing kinda kills my hope. It would be very strange to see GW go back to square bases. Maybe they could use that lotr system for ranking round bases.

Here's hopin' though. Yeah. I have nothing but affection for lotr. I'll complain about the hobbit movies until I'm blue in the face but that's another story. I've also always enjoyed the model range. Most of those models are beautiful but I never had the funds to get into it with WFB taking all my resources. I also prefer the heroic/cartoony scale of WFB models to the realistic lotr but that's not a knock.

Has anyone bought any forge world models recently and what are the casts like.
There’s always a few horror stories but these seem to be from a few years back. I’m thinking they can’t be too bad else they wouldn’t still be selling!
I’m considering picking up a couple of additional things so wanted to get opinions before splashing the cash

The last thing I bought from FW was the Dwarf Command set. That was a few months back. It had no problems.

I wasn't aware of horror stories from Forge World - GW's Finecast, plenty, but not FW. I know some of their 40k vehicles in the past have had some issues fitting without a fair bit of work, but nothing major.
I've bought plenty from FW over the years, including recently, and the casting has always been excellent. Yes, you have some gap filling to do on the bigger monsters, but that's not unusual - Mierce are the only company making models of that type whose quality beats FW. The more recent FW CAD models (e.g. the specialist games ones) fit perfectly - they're the easiest resin models I've ever built.
Also, FW have great customer service - the'll replace miscasts/damaged pieces without quibbling.

My biggest complaint with FW was that they didn't take PayPal and I couldn't hide my purchases from my wife :/
I did get one of the big skaven beasts and it was packed like crap. Showed up broken. They sent me the replacement part with no issues.

Good news! www.warhammer-community.com/2018/08/06/forge-world-better-service-faster-shipping/4 main bits: - You can pay in local currencies, not just £s
- More payment options (various US/continental European things I haven't heard of
) - Warehouse in America - for quicker shipping there
- Faster shipping for everyone due to improved processes
This is bigger for US people; us Brits had things pretty decent already. It's a pity their shipping costs are still crazy, and they won't let you order to GW store pick-up for free, but these are all improvements.

I don't know about other places, but the GW plant in Memphis, TN has an attached store in the front and I've been told that they can always go in the back and get whatever I want, even if it's not on the store shelves, atm. That kinda eliminates the shipping right there if you have access to a plant facility. Improvements like this are always a good thing, though!

They've got free shipping on orders over £75 until the end of the month (usually it's over £250 you need for that).
It also looks like they've changed their regular shipping charges from a 12% cost of your order to a flat £3.50, which means so long as you're spending around £30 or more, it's a saving. Don't know what shipping charges are like for non-UK people.
