My opponent and I played our first game of eighth in a while at the weekend (not from lack of desire but because I've had professional exams) and during deployment a query came up which myself and my opponent couldn't find anything about during our brief flicks through the rulebooks.
Can a warmachine be deployed within a river? I basically wanted to place my cannon in the river due to line of sight reasons but seemed a little odd to do so but couldn't find anything saying you couldn't. As the unit wouldn't be moving I wasn't concerned with difficult terrain tests or anything either.
Thoughts?

From the War Machines section:
War machines treat all terrain other than open ground and hills as impassable. That said, a war machine is permitted to deploy in a building or terrain, but if it does, it cannot move during the game except to pivot on the spot. It should be noted that this rule is intended to allow players to deploy their war machines in sensible and dramatic locations, such as a cannon in a wood or a mortar on top of a tower. It should not be seen as licence to deploy war machines in absurd locations, such as putting a stone thrower inside a roofed building, for example.
I would probably say a cannon in a river is an absurd location

Thanks, we must have missed that. Oh well been months since we played so we are almost relearning again. I do hate it when rules are really specific though, I imagine there would be some who would claim the river is really shallow so it's fine or something (I of course wouldn't). Will ensure I don't deploy in any river next time!

I'll let you do it again, but it'll have to float downstream as the game progresses next time

I'll let you do it again, but it'll have to float downstream as the game progresses next time I figure it'd be too heavy to float, but it'll be impossible the keep the powder dry.

It was a Warp Lightning Cannon, so there's a chance it might just float. Top heavy though, so it'd probably be floating upside-down...

I remember this being a debate on Warhammer-Empire back inna day. I forgot exactly the argument (it's been years) but there was some reason that people were wanting to deploy their cannons in rivers. It was something due to the fact that units can't claim rank bonuses or steadfast while in a river. Gives the crew a bit more of a fighting chance when facing down a horde of 50 Skaven Slaves.
Now, that being said, I agree with Horace, it's absurd to believe that a cannon would ever be deployed in a river. It's not a huge deal in most cases though.

If a river is deep enough to drown 1/6 of any human-size unit crossing it, the whole cannon will be underwater. The only exception would be at a ford or on a bridge.

Rule wise I think it is allowed but I would think it's pretty fraud upon to do so I would house rule to never do it. Or roll a d6 after deployment on 4+ it was a shallow river and works but else sink in the river and can't be used this game

I’d houserule it so no warmachines would work in water but especially not black powder as water would definitely interfere with their ability to fire.
