Gents, I turn once again to the brain trust for collective thoughts on this unit. I love the models and 135 pts for a unit of 3 is pretty cheap but am really struggling in how to make the best use of them.
They could be redirectors but great eagles are better as you can take them as single models.
They could be assassins due to killing blow but the larger base would impact this due to the number of attacks you could direct onto a single model and the reliance on killing blow (though thinking about this, can anyone clarify if being monstrous cav, if you run 3 of them 2 wide with 1 behind, would the 2nd rank get full supporting attacks? I always think of these things travelling to work when my brb is at home!).
They could be warmachines or chaff hunters and skirmish, vanguard, increased ability on the charge and great speed seems to favour this.
What are your thoughts on them

The FAQs gave Monstrous Cavalry supporting attacks for both the rider and mount (up to 3 each), so yes you could field them 2 wide, which could make them decent character assassins.
Whoever wrote the 1d4chan tactics article for Wood Elves thinks they're amazing - I'm not so sure. They're vulnerable to panic if just a single one is taken out, and they're not a cheap throwaway unit like a Great Eagle or 5 Glade Guard. That said, they do pack a decent punch in combat that makes them good at taking out other chaff (most of which they completely outclass), war machines, small ranged units and so on. They can also even do a bit of damage to small 5-man heavy cavalry units, and work well as a flank/rear charger alongside a bigger unit.
I converted some after my last Wood Elf game, but haven't got around to using them yet, as I've been distracted by Dwarves.

Rider only, I am afraid. BRB Official Update Version 1.9, p. 4: Page 83 – Monstrous Cavalry. Add “MONSTROUS SUPPORT Furthermore, the rider of a monstrous cavalry model can make as many supporting attacks as are on its profile, up to a maximum of three.” to the end of the paragraph.

Whoops, my mistake. I read the bit beneath in the FAQs about Monstrous Beasts too and failed to notice the different title.

It's my personal belief that these guys clear the field for your army. They hunt chaff, war machines and any loose ends that may be looking for a juicy flank/rear charge. Their optimal movement can get them around the board quickly to do this duty. This also allows them to march block really well, if your Eagles are not already doing that with their chaff duty. Once these tasks are done, any CC blocks will probably have engaged by this point, allowing them to line up some great (and well timed) flank/rear charges.
I wouldn't focus too much on the KB ability, since I think that is more of a distraction than anything. The circumstances where that would come into play and pay off, are few and far between. Same with their ranged attack. It might help pick one or two chaff off (Goblin Wolf Riders for example) before you engage them, but with only 3 shots, it's usually not going to be a critical swing in your favor. Their ability to stomp is good, but you'll usually be boned there when it comes to mounted chaff (which most are).
They are a fun take, and certainly not the norm, so most players won't be expecting to see them, or know how to deal with them. I will say that Hit n' Run tactics are usually what Wood Elves excel at, so board control is crucial to that. Warhawk Riders certainly go a long way toward achieving this.

I like these guys and personally don't feel I use them enough, they do have four great advantages though, faster than wild riders, cheaper than them, tougher than them and you get plus one to cast spells from lore of beasts on them (plus 4 if your level two is in a wood).
