I wonder if characters in units have to shoot together with its unit? Does it also apply to magic weapons?
Let's say I have a hero with hail of doom arrows wood elves magic item and he is positioned in a glade guard unit. Do all shoots need to be at the same target. As stated in the shooting section of brb?
“Now you’ve chosen the unit that will make the shooting attack, you need to choose a target for it to shoot at. All models in the same unit must shoot at the same target, so choose carefully.”
Excerpt From: Games Workshop Ltd. “WARHAMMER RULEBOOK.”

Yep. A character in a unit has to shoot at the same target as the unit. If the general wants the character and unit to shoot at separate targets, he needs to move the character out of the unit during the preceding movement phase.
Of course, this has it's own risks....

What vulcan says. Unless a model has the Sniper special rule or another specific exemption, it must shoot at the same target as the unit it is in.
On a side note: it is "Hail of Doom Arrow" not "Arrows" - a refutation of one of the arguments brought by those that say enchanted arrows do not follow the magic items "Unique" rule.

This is why you see a lot of Wood Elf players running solo character just outside of nearby units. They fire off the HoDA and them jump back in the unit on his next turn. Make sure that the character you put it on has a high BS, because he'll be shooting with several negative modifiers applies, usually, so you want to get maximum hits off the arrows the shot generates to take full advantage of the S4.

As a totally irrelevant aside, I don’t think you can be a true woodelf player and not take the HODA. To do otherwise is just unnatural and wrong.

Heh, I remember that item from the first ever Battle Report I read featuring Wood Elves. I was just a young un back then and my little cousin asked me what Wood Elves do. Trying to sound knowledgeable I told him that anyone they touch turns into wood and that's why they are so fearsome.

Yesterday it managed to kill a single ork. But as a true woodelf I will keep it in my lists and hope it will shine some day.

Last night a hoda in a 10 GG poison unit more or less took out 4 ledbelchers 😊 last Belcher was removed by a true flight GG unit.

I do not like running HoDA on anything less then BS 6. You don't want to waste those S4 hits.
With BS 6 you usually hit on 3+ for long tange and multishot. Avarage out 7 hits S4 = ~ 3W.
Enough to cripple a lot of chaff but it doesn't do much against RnF units.

Yeah, I've always been underwhelmed by the performance of the HoDA. It just doesn't have a huge impact, usually. Now, if it was an item that could be used EVERY turn, then I'd pay 50 points for that!

It is good at taking out chaff or lonely chars though. Let's says HE reavers, woc dogs or horsemen and so on. It's 30p magic item used to take out annoying 30-50p chaff.

I love that is has been pretty much the same rules since at least 3rd Edition. It’s one of the few consistants in life 😀.
I think you are all right, it’s best use is to remove units of chaff. As much as you’d love it to be a unit killer it just is too random for it.
