I am going to face 1500 points of high elves with my chaos dwarfes this evening. My list will be:
Sorcerer-prophet -scroll -lore of Hashut 290
Infernal Castellan -great weapon -dragonhelm -bsb 145
19 Infernal guard -musician -standart -champion 260
10 Infernal guard -fireglaives 170
Magma cannon 145
Deathshrieker rocket launcher 100
3 Bull centaur renders 120
Hellcannon 210
5 Hobgoblin wolf raiders
which sums up to exactly 1500 points.
I will probably not be able to change my list before the game, but please discuss anyway.

My only thought is almost a third of your points are in wamachines and a further 3rd in characters so you have very few troops.
I just wondered if at the points level you are playing, that you have too many War machines?

I guess you are right, the list is a little bit light on troops. I could have left the deathshrieker out and add to the big infernal guard unit.
The characters are already relatively cheap (for chaos dwarfes). The only thing I could have done to spare some points would be to leave the bsb out or use a hero level sorcerer instead of the lord. Normally I do not leave without a bsb in game where one failed leadership check may cost you the game. I was also expecting my opponent to bring a lvl 4 mage with book of hoth (which he did, with shadow magicðŸ˜), so I wanted at least a level 3 mage to oppose him.

Do you run 25 or 50% lords/heroes? Yes, it's a problem with expensive units in low games. I thought you actually got a lot more in there then I expected Deathshrieker is possibly amazing vs. low toughness elves. Hellcanon is as much a unit that holds the flank as 10-15 more guards. Just make sure you bring it forward so it can charge when needed.

We normally go with 25% lords and heroes.
I agree that the deathshrieker is nice against elves but both magma cannon and hellcannon are shooting s5 templates, which is even nicer. The deatshrieker is of course the cheapest option and is also very versatile.
The hellcannon is indeed much more than a warmachine. It is also an unbreakable, super tough, thunderstomping monster with bad manners and perfect for anchoring one flank and counter charging.

Lets us know how it went 😊
Is the differences so big though? S3 big template (don't forget homing and small template on misses) S5 small template
Don't get me wrong magma cannon is sick.
Let's say a unit of 20 elves 5x4. You kill about 10 on each right?

I would say that a direct hit with a small s5 template on a unit of twenty 20mm bases hits about 16. Wounding on 2+ and negating the typical 5+ armor save of the elves, you get around 13 to 14 kills. While a big s3 template will hit all twenty models, it will only wound on 4+ (10 wounds) and allow armor saves (around 6 to 7 kills). So I would say against a medium sized elf unit the s5 templates are better. Against much bigger units the big unit will obviously hit much more models and so the deathshrieker becomes better. It does also hit better than the hellcannon (I would say that the magma cannon still hits better than both) and is more versatile than the magma cannon.
I will try to write a battle report in the following days.
