Well, I've been working away at a unit of 20 Wildwood Rangers. They're almost finished. I should have some pics up soon. I'm about half way to the ten hour goal though!

Here is what I have been working on for the last couple of weeks. For our upcoming mega battle we need attackers siege equipment and I did not have any so I decided it was time to build some ladders at least. I have completed 13 of these and have enough materials left for 7 more I believe. That will give me 20 which is a good number I think. In terms of the finish, I am looking for some input. The square wooden dowels I am using make me think of rough cut lumber which would have the color that you currently see. However I am thinking these may end up looking better if they were painted. I am thinking I may try applying a dark colored wash just to give them a weathered look. Opinions and thoughts?

RE: Painting - - You are 100% right with a wash. Is that 1/4in SQ D balsa or craft wood? I bought a very similar product from Dan's Crafts & Things. A coat of GW flesh wash straight out of the pot looks great. Really makes the wood grain pop!
Post wash... I also hit it with a spongy sandpaper block to weather it. I think it looked better before that step. Shoulda stopped while I was ahead.

The main posts are 1/4 square and the cross bars are 1/8 square. Both are bass wood.

Bass wood is definitely the way to go. Balsa will break in no time.

Here is the final product after a coat of wash. I am happy with how it turned out, I do think it looks better than before with plain wood. I did end up having enough material for 20 and have washed 13 so far. That completed my 10 hours for October as well.

Also, I should mention these have used a tremendous amount of wash as the wood is so absorbent. I started with a roughly half full old pot of delvan mud thinking it would be enough for all the ladders. After about 5 it was gone.

Ladder looks good. But, oh no! devlan mud is worth it's weight in gold to some (or so I hear).
I think for an application like this lame old wood stain from the home depot should do the trick.

Oooo, yeah, I didn't think about just how much it'd stain.
When I was in college, I had an assignment where I needed a portion of the building I was modeling, look weathered. I put the peices and parts under a blowtorch and would scald them, then lightly hit them with a sandblock. I had to repeat this process over and over, but I eventually got the weathered look I desired. This was very labor intensive and I doubt that you'd want to go to that much effort. The key was not taking off too much of the the surface though because it was still white beneath.
For what it's worth.

Looks dope Dan. I still want to see that thin ink line around the eyes...so they look grim rather than surprised.
