I am currently using huge pieces of felt. I've got green, brown, and gray. Lately, though, I have been considering investing in or making something a little more awesome. Part of me wants to buy one of these new game mats (F.A.T. for example) but I'm not sure how much I will enjoy playing my games on top of a picture of scenery. Then I thought about making a textured terrain board and I'm hesitant to have something that is inflexible and that might limit the way I can use terrain from my collection. Does anyone have a great solution to this? I host LOTS of games at my house and I want the guest experience to be tops.

I have always been a fan of modular 2ft x 2ft square pieces on 2in thick insulation board. The material lets you model scars in the land, rivers, etc and apply flock or rock as you see fit.

I have only experienced the Realm of Battle tiles at GW stores. They look nice but are limited and the divides between them annoy me. I personally am a huge fan of the Citidel Battlemat and it is probably the best value purchase i have ever made from GW.

I've done some research and I agree that the F.A.T. Mats are what I want. Since my basement is a bit of a center for gaming, it's time to invest in these things. I plan to get:
Grassy Plains Wasteland Arctic
At around $100 each, it's going to take some time to do this but I feel like I've got a plan now.

I'd chip in some amount of cash to ease the pain.

Rick if you are interested check out gamemat.eu they made most of the high end mats we had at Da Boyz this year (only a few tables had them) I've got a space mat from them for xwing that's been great. Tell them Da Boyz sent you if you do buy from them.
I hadn't really used those kinds of mats before this year and I do like it.
Also the Crossroads style prebuilt table tops aren't too hard to build if you've got space to store them.

I looked at those mats and they have a nice price point. My concern (personal preference, mind you) is that their art quality is not as great as the Frontline art. I wish I could see these things in person, it would make the job much easier.
I DID purchase a FAT MAT last night from Amazon...it should be in my hands within a week and I can get a better feel for which ones I want next.
