Hi, So as sort of a foreword, I’m not the best painter, and despite having a lot of models, very few are actually painted. 2019 is the year that’s gonna change, and what about a better way to get started then a new army. The first small unit I’m gonna paint will be 10 Darkshards. Idea is to get a nice color scheme going and if I were to mess up, I have enough spare Darkshards left. Here are Some pictures of my first model. Most of the initial layering done Added the last details And after the shading had been applied. So I still need to clean up the model a bit but I like the colors. This model lacks the oportunity to throw in some black as the second main color, but basicly the idea is to go traditional Dark Elf but replace purple with teal. As I’m quite happy with the results, I’m likely to continue this way and do the other 9 Darkshards next to finish the unit.

It's a solid start, and good move with testing out the scheme on a model then unit first. What's good is that you can also come back at a later date if you want to make changes, for example adding an extra highlight to the skin so it's paler.
Those Dark Elf crossbows were also the very first models I painted when I got into WFB some years back, and mine were pretty similar (albeit traditional purple rather than teal).

This is a very good start! I like the teal you've chosen! I might heavy up on the Nuln Oil wash on the metal parts. That'll help give more 3-D effect and not look quite so flat. After that, it's on to highlighting and you'll be on par with pretty much everyone here! Great work!

Looks like a perfect start! If you want easy and fast cheap bases I recommend these Vallejo products. Just smush it on and dry brush one layer of highlight and you are done. youtu.be/lU_Rg3OQiic

Thanks for all the replies. Glad you like the scheme, makes me feel that little more confident in what I’m doing here.
I hope to finish this unit in the next two weeks. As a motivation for myself, I got 30 BG waiting in my LGS, but I’m only allowing myself to pick those up if I’m finished with this unit 😅. I’ll keep posting my progress.
As for bases, I give them a few layers light brown, and put some sand and grass over them. But that’s for last

If you really want to get the army secondary color in, paint the belt black instead of teal. This will also help define the belt as it's own entity instead of blending in with the robes underneath the armor.
One more thing - there's a small detail you missed. Tied to the end of the belt where it dangles down around his feet, there are two metal hooks. Dark elves being dark elves, they use these to torture prisoners. So... a bit of boltgun, a little bit of scab red, and now you have a detail that pops out and tells a (rather grim) story.

Nice start with the unit, it’s good to see something other than purple.
Don’t worry about posting anything here. I’m not the greatest painter but everyone is alway appreciative of any painted model and always happy to offer tips (which you can choose to ignore or not 😀).

Technically I haven't either, I've been using equivalents from other hobby lines, but my mind still processes them as 'scab red' and 'boltgun'. Besides... scab red is absolutely perfect. More than once I've wondered when and how I cut or scraped myself, only to discover that I had actually painted myself with scab red...

My friend has a reverse story: he cleaned up spilled scab red 3 times before realizing he was bleeding from his foot.

And now I'm wondering if, in a pinch, blood could be used as a substitute for scab red...

So it’s been a busy week, with 2 RP sessions and the London Philharmonicon in Antwerp, therefore not much progress. I hope to finish some more Darkshards today. Likely after that I Will take a break from my Dark Elves for s short time. But with good reason... I hope to provide more details tonight 😎

Small update (a little later then promised). Current state: I will finish these in the next following days. Then it will be some WoC for me. I bought a friends (painted) army. It was painted up to about 2000 points, but since I almost exclusively play at 2500, I’ll need to finish some (included but not assembled) units. Since this seems not so much work (about half a Knight unit, 3 Skullcrushers and some Warriors) I’m likely to finish those first.

While I know you're not done with them, I do think the black belts look much better against the armor and teal robes than teal belts do.
