The Ghoul King flies to the top of the tower and glares down at the Chaos Dwarfs facing him. Colonel Xanders raises his head from the back of his Great Taurus to meet the feral gaze of the Ghoul King and stares back, his cruel eyes expressing contempt rather than fear. For centuries Colonel Xanders had worn a giant steel hat perched upon his brow which weighed more than a zombie as a symbol of his position of power and respect within the Chaos Dwarf heirarcy. This vampire will burn, just like the others he mused as he nodded in acknowledgment for the Death Rocket to begin loading. In front of him two units of skeletons were advancing rapidly, their unnatural gate causing their bones to make a weird crackling sound as they advanced. It was a good thing they were already dead Xanders pondered, what living, rational being would willingly advance into the broad muzzles of a unit of Chaos Dwarf Blunderbusses. The skeletons charged forwards into the hailshot of blunderbuss fire. Colonel Xanders blanched and nearly choked as the smoke cleared, a mere two skeletons had fallen. What sorcery was this? (It was the sorcery of poor dice and only 20 shots, unbelievable! Even with the rerolls to wound the 550 point unit only managed to kill 10 points of skeletons. Astragoth would not be impressed and neither was I). With ruthless efficiency borne from hours of regimented practice the Chaos Dwarfs close ranks and prepared to engage the skeletons in melee.

As if embarassed by the failure of their stand and shoot reaction the blunderbuss horde set about bludgeoning as many skeletons into powder as they can. The pile of bodies shown being the result of one combat round. The Death Rocket lands a hit on the Von Carstein skeleton horde which scatters slightly but due to the blast radius of the rockets several skeletons are still killed (again). Over 2 or 3 rounds of combat the Blunderbuss horde finishes off the 2 skeleton spearmen units for the loss of only 4 Chaos Dwarfs. The wide muzzled blunderbuss functioning as both a shield and a weapon in close combat. A more than 10 to 1 ratio Colonel Xanders thought, not bad. With an instinctive thought Vlad Von Carstein directs the zombie dragon to destroy the death rocket which had the audacity to fire at his unit. Nearby in the same unit a soot faced Konrad Von Carstein seethes impotently. On the other side of the battlefield the Blood Knights make cautious, tactical moves. Their well known phobia of trees is in full effect as they attempt to safely navigate the forest. The knight champion shudders slightly as he ponders the possibility of losing his immortality to merciless shrubbery. How many blood knight brothers had been lost over the years to vengeful vegetation..........how many brothers had been lost?

The Chaos Dwarf Great Weapon horde ignores the Von Carstein horde and engages with the Necrofex Colossus. It is charged in return by the Undead Mammoth, the twin thunderstomps causing devastation. The Chaos Dwarf Battle Standard Bearer is in this unit along with a Castellan with shield. The Battle Standard Bearer manages to wound the great Colossus. The Great Weapons are capable of causing damage but the Colossus' regenerative capabilities keep it in the fight. It is a brutal and relatively even matched affair with the undead monsters being hurt but many Chaos Dwarfs falling to their high strength attacks (Necrofex Colossus is strength 7, Undead Mammoth is strength 6) Eventually the Mammoth kills all the Chaos Dwarfs within reach and rampages on towards the Chaos Dwarfs. Behind the main Chaos Dwarf line, Gimli, seemingly reborn from his prior death to the Vampire Counts (squished by the Necrofex Colossus in the Ghoul King vs Forest Ring battle) seizes his moment and lines up the zombie dragon (the death rocket had miraculously survived combat with the zombie dragon, opening up the Gimli charge) Humming a battle hymm, Gimli charges the Zombie Dragon with a smile on his face. All he can think about is the possibility of wearing a Big Hat.

The Ghoul King on Terrorgheist attempts a charge down from the tower into the side of the Blunderbuss horde....and fails! Astragoth, the ancient High Priest of Hashut, sees his opening and together with his honour guard charges the great undead monster in the flank. He is joined by his blazing Great Taurus which swoops in to support Hashut's chosen representative. Astragoth's intervention is sorely needed as the Necrofex Colossus has whittled the Chaos Dwarf great weapon horde down to just the unit champion. Flanked by the Castellan and Battle Standard Bearer the unit holds. Vlad Von Carstein watches this unfold from a distance and wills his Blood Knights to use the distraction of the Ghoul King to kill Astragoth and his retinue by assaulting them in the flank. Maybe the Ghoul King will bekilled before they get there he thinks to himself with a sly fanged smile. The Blood Knights see their opening, Astragoth's flank is wide open and his bodyguard are busy hacking great chunks out of the Terrorgheist. The only thing between them and the soft juicy Chaos Dwarf flank is a tree. It's just one tree the Blood Knight champion reassures himself, we've got this. Meanwhile the Necrofex Colossus kills the Unit Champion, completely eliminating the Great Weapon horde but is in turn brought down by the Castellan and Battle Standard Bearer who avenge the grevious loss of their unit.

I’m loving the large size of this battle, it means the number of u it’s make it look epic but not too crowded. The blood knights (Knights who say Nee!) and their phobia of trees is very funny. I’m expecting big losses for them and some kind of interesting fact around the number of the order that have been lost to shrubbery accidents bs deaths in battle.
