I’ve been re-watching a few Orc Tactical Team videos by Malorian recently and there are a number that I think that, although the concepts are obvious, are still worth putting down.
Tarpit units (such as Goblins) tend to be fielded as a counter to an opponents dangerous units (or those you don’t want to face at that point of time). You’ll normally field the tarpit 5 wide and as deep as possible to ensure they keep steadfast and hold their target in place.
Many players will then leave it there and consider it job done if the tarpit gets into the desired combat. However what do you do if you have your own elite unit (let’s say a unit of Black Orcs) that has beaten its own opponent and you now want to charge the opponents unit that is tarpitted by your Goblins? You know your Black Orcs will smash the foe but you may not win combat as your weedy Goblins will be hemoraging combat res as they get cut down.
The answer is to run away. On your turn, combat reform as wide as possible so you are no longer steadfast. When he inevitably beats you, your Gobbos will run away and he has the choice of trying to catch them (thus continuing to expose his flank to the counter charge from your Orcs) or reforming to face the impending Orc charge, allowing the Goblins to escape (both saving you the points for the unit and potentially allowing them to rally in a future turn).
