What better than a nice game of warhammer? A nice BIG game of warhammer. This is my favorite way of enjoying the game (I don't nearly get enough of it though due to the considerable logistics involved) and I think 8th edition really holds up remarkably well when scaling up. I thought we could maybe have a little discussion on big games (let's say 7K and up...although that is rather arbitrary). There ought to be some connoisseurs on here, judging by the awesome big armies in the painting section. some things I would love to hear about: -what's your general experience -what rule changes did you make, if any -how long did it take -what armies did you use, do you think some armies perform better or worse? -army size vs table size Of course PICTURES would be awesome to.

I think 8th scales up wonderfully! I love big battles. Alas all my epic mega battle photos were lost to the void with my old phone. 2 notable large battles i hosted. - A 3 vs 3 player 'Battle for the Phoenix Crown' which i hosted. 5250 points per side. Battle was a draw but Malekith killed Tyrion in single combat so i guess his claim is legit haha. And epic 2 vs 1 (me and my mate vs another mate) with 5000 points per side. Took all up about 5 and a bit hours. This was a "to the death" battle which ended with after the dust had cleared a single solitary model surviving with 1 wound. 10000 points reduced to 1 wound. It was truly an epic! In order for us to complete this battle in a 'timely' manner we played it under full Chillhammer rules which meant no magic phase at all and no wizards. This effectively reduces turn time by almost a third which was the only way we managed to finish it in a single night. Given we started at 11:30pm we finished to the lovely sounds of morning birds chirping. We completely ignored army restrictions. Beasts and Undead vs High Elves was the theme. Considering the battle came down to the wire with only a sole survivor id say we did a good job of balancing it Both the above battles were played on a 6 x 4 table. The second battle with lots of skeletons and large based monsters etc became a bit cramped early on but this was all part of the fun. Mega battles (7k points plus on table) are one of my very favourite things about 8th. In my opinion with the right group and mindset 8th scales both up and down very well. The deployment phase of mega battles is a game in itself

Grandmaster Wang, BACKUP YOUR FREAKING PHOTOS, what a loss! Sound like some fun games. Yes, deployment phases take a while. We try to do that the day before. In our experience, one key point is making sure the table size is appropriate. You don't want miniatures stacked like sardines just stumbling forward with no room to maneuver. We also set up the deployment zone so that you can't put units within one foot of the short sides. This allows for some attempt at flanking movement from faster units. Wilson, you must be referring to these guys: Karanak is modern, the others are an older fleshhound version except for a head or two. This is a picture from our latest and grandest endeavor yet, a 25K game (which I have plastered all over the internet before). In this case we had four 6x4, so it ended up being 16x6. The extra depth helps a little with setting up multiple battle lines. If you are interested in big games, this is THE place to go (and no, I only wish I was a part of that group): hoodlinghole.blogspot.com/I think there are over 900 pictures from the Battle of Heffengen, that should scratch your itch.

Big games are fun, my last big game which was quite awhile ago was 5k per side it was me with 2.5k of high elves with my teammate at 2.5k of tomb kings vs 5k of lizardmen. It was interesting to say the least.
Me and my teammate had very poor synergy. I built a fast list and he was tomb kings..... I got tabled by turn 4..the last model on the table was my high mage which was my general but was fleeing by himself because his unit was wiped out and failed the ld test.
Are you talking specifically 1v1 big games or team big games?

With two red swords? Just to the left of the multi-colored woods? If so... where is it from? What line? Statue? Action figure?

Are you talking specifically 1v1 big games or team big games? I think one thing to watch out for is that a big game isn't just a bunch of little games played side by side. This tends to happen when multiple people bring small armies. Then everyone just uses their little army to beat up the guy right opposite. On the other hand, I have played a 15K game with just one player per side and it took ~20 hrs to resolve (spread over multiple days). Probably there is a sweet spot, maybe two to three dedicated people per side. And, some mechanism to make it feel like one army (even if it is pieced together). For example assigning a 'Grand Marshal' with a bigger leadership bubble. But, there might be more rule amendments that people use?

ah, the big teeth version. I am not an expert on fleshhound evolution but, I think my guys are the generation before big teeth (which was 6th). But, maybe somebody here knows more? (also, I can't figure out how to multi-quote on this forum. sorry for the spam)

That is Krakanrok the Black. Father of all Dragon Ogres. Legend says Krakanrok is the size of the mountain so...a bit of an exaggeration, but not by much. The model is based on something from here: www.resin-kit.com/ but then rather extensively converted. ...and I had nothing to do with it. See the guy to the right of the tape measure? That's a regular dragon ogre. I think at this point the shaggoth had already left the field with an inferiority complex.

Lovely pictures. That fire elemental in front of Krakanrok looks good too.
Who won that battle in the end? Did Krakanrok get slain?

Some great looking stuff there!
Long ago we used to do mega battles occasionally by just cramming everything we had on the table, good vs. bad. In 4th edition we managed to get over 80k on a 7x4 table (ignoring restrictions so lots of characters). There was no 1" rule back then either. We had fun, but we don't do it like that anymore.
I've talked about this in my paintlog already but basically we plan for one big family game every year. It's me, my two brothers and our father. We've settled for 10,000 points per side so far. That is a lot less than we potentially could play, but we've found that it is a really nice size of game that allows for manoeuvre on the table, takes us one full day to play and can be played for as many turns as it takes to really finish. Too often big battles have to be ended early because the setup and first turns take forever. We tend to play 7-10 turns, which has taken us 8-14 hours.
Our first game was me and my father combining our Ogre armies and playing against a combined force of Dark Elves and Chaos Warriors. This was a full Storm of Magic game. The most memorable moment was when my brothers deployed Forge World's Emperor Chaos Dragon. We had no idea they had the model and they had even prepared special theme music for it.
The second game was Lizardmen and Empire against Chaos Warriors and Beastmen. We dropped Fulcrums and Storm of Magic spells and items but kept the Monster allowance so people could bring whatever amazing monsters they had.
The third game, two years ago now, was double Lizardmen against Chaos Warriors and Dark Elves.
Last year we couldn't play due to my wife's illness, but this year we are coming back in a big way with Skarsnik's Night Goblins and Queek's Skaven against the Dwarfs of King Belegar and High King Thorgrim in a reclamation war battle for Karak Eight Peaks. While I've painted and converted new stuff for the other games as well, the effort I'm making this time is really above and beyond anything I've done before. The date is set for May 28th and I'm really looking forward to it!
