@kevin, it's very sad indeed but all good things must come to an end. To be fair, alot of that is metal and outdated models. GW's spring cleaning I suppose. @wilson, no Idea but don't hold your breath.

This is really discouraging news for the long-term health of WFB (8th or 9 age). I'm assuming more there will be more to come. That make it even less likely for new players to even consider playing.
A game without official support and models that are unavailable/rare is a rough road to go down.

A game without official support and models that are unavailable/rare is a rough road to go down. I'm not sure that this is really a problem, as long as you and your opponent know which characters and units are which and they are on the correct size base then who cares if it's the official GW model. Indeed it surely makes for more interesting modelling and battles if models are taken from a variety of different manufacturers and converted to suit. Sure it's a shame that lots of great stuff is now unavailable. Perhaps a sticky thread of alternative model sources would help also a reference document showing the base sizes of all units mentioned in army books would help newcomers to the game...

creepingdeathThis is a great idea. I'm going to go through all the army books, and make a "Base Size Table" to post here...

The Ninth Age already has extensive threads with alternative minis in each of the army subforums.
Personally I tend to prefer GW models 99% of the time.

I think based on the releases recently some of the 8th ed and older models may be replaced with new models under a different name Maw-Crusha vs Wyvern for example. Whether the new or old look excites folks more may be in the eye of the beholder. Given that 8th edition style empire troops are in the new Order compendium I think the rumors of entire armies getting axed may be premature - they may get new names and some will get new models.
GW's annual report released a few months ago talked about trimming the production lines because the catalog is unreasonably huge (at least in comparison to what sells). I think we're seeing some of that with this move.

I'm all for using multiple different miniature manufacturers.
