Hey dudes, I know this gets covered a lot, but I had trouble finding the thread which I assume exists. Magnets!!! Which sizes are the best to use for what?

I have only needed two sizes so far. I have a very tiny size. 1 x 2 mm N50 neodymium. I have used them to make removable shields, or weapons. For a whim, I gave all my WE Eternal Guards removable shields, using this size. In the bolt thrower model below there is a magnet (actually two) between the crank handle the middle dwarf is holding and the main body of the machine. They would be undetectable unless I pointed them out. But they are also strong enough that I can attach my Bretonnia knights to their horses and hold them upside-down with only one magnet (actually two). All my Bretonnian knights are magnetized to their mounts with just one magnetic connection. (However, the BSB can overpower the magnet when wiggled repeatedly upside-down). Also in the photo below, I used 6 magnets of this size under the frame of the bolt thrower to magnetize that heavy chunk of pewter to my movement tray. It took 6 to be able to hold it upside-down, which is my standard test for magnetic effectiveness. But, they remain undetectable. I don't know if a size smaller than this exists, because I haven't needed to look. So far, this size has been adequate for all my small parts. The other size I use is about 2 x 6 mm. I use them under my figure (infantry and cavalry) bases to magnetize them. All 3 dwarves below have them. Undetectable. The key under the bases is to be 2 mm or less thick, because that is all the clearance you have under standard GW bases. The exact diameter is probably not as important under the bases, but the thickness definitely is. Here's a link to my personal blog with a tutorial on how I magnetize bases. It's nothing new for experienced crafters, but newbies might want to check it out. I find all my magnets on eBay.

azknight’s blog was what I used to magnetise my first models. Great guide 👍

Is there any easy way to magnetise mdf bases? I remember trying to do it before with adhesive sheet but it was fiddly and time consuming.

Add som tape on top afterwards then glue magnet on place and then remove tape when glue is dry. Will not be visible after you finish the base. Or just don’t drill all the way through, just the height of the magnet.

But if you are just as clumsy as me do the drilling before you attach and/or paint a mini on top because accidents can happen if you drill too far in
