I'm in the process of choosing an army and need some information. Specifically, I'm curious about Lizardmen. I have neither played Lizardmen myself nor have I ever played against them, so I don't really have a good handle on what their basic strategies are or what kinds of units are commonly included in the army. And I'm really not familiar with the unit by name, so just knowing that, say, Kroxigors are commonly included, wouldn't really help cause I don't know what those bad boys do. Some context: there are several factors that I'm looking for in an army. I suppose the most important factor is the overall feel of the theme and fluff. For example, I really want an army of "good guys," so a lot of armies are not even under consideration. I've narrowed things down to Lizzies, Wood Elves, High Elves, Bretonnia, and Dwarfs. The models are important, but there are models I really like within each of those 5 armies, so I wouldn't feel like I'd be settling by picking an army with older less-impressive models (like Bretonnia). If I'm being honest with myself, play style is more important than models. I would rather have an army of pretty awesome models and a play style I really enjoy, than an army of unbelievably awesome models that plays a style I don't enjoy. My ideal play style is one that tends toward close combat, but the army is flexible overall and can be played in a variety of ways. I'd like the army to feel quite different from game to game if the list is significantly changed. I don't want to feel pigeonholed into one play style. Thanks guys

stirling, Lizardmen are an excellent choice, here is why: • Painting: You can really paint them in any colors and they will still fit the WFB background and theme, as well as looking cool and believable. You can even use real examples from the Animal Kingdom to design a color scheme, such as exotic-colored frogs, real lizards, or dinosaurs, etc. • Models and units. Like Orcs & Goblins, Lizardmen have a huge number of units available to them. This gives you plenty of options and many avenues to create particular themed armies (such as an all Skink army, or an army made of mostly large monsters, etc.). • You can suit Lizards to really any form of play AND do well in battle! You can make a magic heavy army, a shooty army, a combat army, or any mix in between! They can be a powerful hit & run army, a powerful ambusher army, a deadly close combat army, etc. • They have some of the best troops in the game. I believe in all of their incarnations from 4th edition to 8th edition, Saurus Warriors (their main core) are/were some of the best troops in the game. S4, T4, multiple Attacks, good armour, plus being cold-blooded (LD tests on 3D6, discounting the highest dice roll), which makes them difficult to break. They are over looked by many Lizard players, who often prefer Skinks for their hit & run tactics. • They are pretty much the ultimate 'good guy' army. Traditional tournament-style armies of Lizardmen usually were heavily Skink based with lots of poisonous shooting attacks, flyers, salamanders and powerful Slann magic. Though in 8th edition, since Skirmishers are not as powerful as they once were, players usually have one or two blocks of Saurus warriors/Temple guard. A large horde of Saurus Warriors are potent and scary. I personally like using Skink and Kroxigor mixed units - basically a unit of ranked Skinks can include Kroxigors in their units. This is a single unit where you get the combined power of hard hitting monstrous infantry, plus lots of ranks from the diminutive Skinks, it's like getting your cake and eating it too! Anyway, overall Lizards are a great army with lots of option in terms of both tactics and modeling/painting options.

Fantastic! This is exactly what I was hoping to get. Thanks a bunch for the info. I shall be strongly considering this army. The GW models are beautiful and I have seen some really stunning paint jobs. An enjoyable painting experience is also a huge plus

Which are your favourite 'must have' lizardmen models stirling?
The ones which you would definately get if you started a lizardmen army.
Great breakdown by KevinC. I tend to lean towards bad guys but have a small lizardmen army due to my love of dinosaurs.
Regarding playstyle, even the choice of whether to fill your core with saurus or the faster skinks can make a big difference.
While lizardmen have extreme magic via slann my favourite lizardmen play style is in your face monster nom nom style!

Hey, great question. The large models are really impressive IMO. I have to say that the Bastilodon with snakes spewing out of the stone is probably my favorite. The aesthetic of the sculpt is GW at it's best, and with the colors of the snakes the entire models is truly one of a kind. I also think the Stegadon is amazing. Painting one of those two models would be such a cool project, that's where I'd start I'm curious, how are Lizzies the "ultimate" good guy army? I know nothing about the fluff. My main hesitation with Lizardmen is that walking dino dudes aren't exactly classic fantasy (at least not that I'm aware of). They seem a bit out of place to me in the Warhammer world. Right now I'd say I'm most seriously considering between Lizzies, High Elves, and Dwarfs. I'm really not a fan of the play styles of Wood Elves or Bretonnia, though I do love their fluff and models.

I painted a Lizardmen army a few years back and I love playing it. The best thing about it is that it is so versatile. You'll be doing stuff in all phases of the game, and doing it well. If I play a lot with a more one-dimensional army like my Daemons or Ogres, I can get a bit bored with it. That never happens with Lizardmen (or Greenskins). So if I had just one army, I would want it to be a versatile one that could do anything.
Try to get hold of the Lizardmen armybook and read up on their background, too. You'll see how they fit into the grand scheme of things. They are the oldest race and the original enemy of chaos.

High elves can be fully mounted or fully on foot. They have some fun characters, dragons and Phoenixes. I would not call them the most versatile army. Also aesthetically the elven foot soldiers are not THAT different. But they are fun to play due to their reliability and magic options

I'm curious, how are Lizzies the "ultimate" good guy army? I know nothing about the fluff. At a very high level here is some basic lizardmen background. The old ones were a god like race that crafted much of the warhammer world in accordance with their great plans. They were the creators of lizardmen, elves, dwarves and man. With the arrival of chaos the old ones disappeared from the world, their fate unknown. However the slann, the very intelligent mages and leaders of the lizardmen race have continued to carry on the old one great plans to the best of their ability.

And their behavior is perplexing to the other races, as the Slann are trying to operate under the original plan of the Old Ones, which they themselves fully do not comprehend.
There was a cool story in one of the Lizard books where this envoy of High Elves came to visit a Slann Priest. When the Lizards escorted the Elves to their priest, the Slann only stated that they were not suppose to be there and the Lizardmen slaughtered all of the Elves.

Bastiladon and Stegadon along with the carnosaur/troglodon are my very favourite models in the lizardmen army. They will make a great start. Bastiladon i see as an anchor to the stegadon's battering ram.
