Hello! Played a small game this weekend to familiarize myself once again with the rules for 8th edition. This game was fun! And ended up being incredibly close.
The armies:
Skaven-
Chieftan w/armor of Destiny and Halberd
25 Clanrats w/ Full Command & Plague Mortar
25 Slaves w/ Musician
25 Slaves w/ Musician
25 Stormvermin w/ Full Command & Warpfire Thrower
Warp Lightning Cannon
Dwarfs-
Thane w/ Master Rune of Gromril & Great Weapon
20 Warriors w/ Full Command & Great Weapon
10 Thunderers
10 Thunderers
Grudge Thrower
Gyrocopter
Turn 1:
Skaven-
The Skaven March up the field - Clanrats go one way, Stormvermin with 2 Flank Slave supports go the other way
Shooting sees the Warp Lightning Cannon line up a shot on the Gyrocopter, manage to hit the thing, but it rolls a '1' to Wound!!
Dwarfs-
Dwarfs shuffle in preparation for the Skaven advance, Gyrocopter moves up to both be out of sight of the cannon, and out of charge arc of the slaves. It was a fancy piece of maneuvering!
Gyrocopter manages to be in range of the steam cannon and lets loose onto one unit of slaves. Manages to kill 9 of them!! They pass their panic test.
Grudge Thrower scatters a bit and puts a rock right where it hits nothing
Thunderers let loose into in the Stormvermin and the Clanrats, killing 2 and 1 respectively
Turn 2:
Skaven-
Skaven do some shuffling in the movement phase, no charges declared as everything is out of range or sight arc.
Warpfire Thrower lines up a shot on the Gyrocopter but in a great display of skaven ineptitude manages to roll the only distance result that would result in a non-hit (2)
The Warplighting cannon shows signs of possible treachery as the shot lands more or less on target (the Warriors) but fizzles out as the calculations by the engineer were incorrect.
The only piece of Skaven shooting that comes through is the Plague Mortar - although it scatters a small amount it still manages to hit and kill some dwarfs this turn.
Dwarfs-
Dwarf Warriors reform, a unit of thunderers moves up to better protect the flank of the warriors, and the Gyrocopter prepares to steam
In a remarkable display of lethality the steam gun covers roughly 20 Stormvermin and manages to kill 12 of them! They pass their panic test
The Grudge Thrower misfires, but manages to only put itself out of action for a turn
The unit of thunderers that can shoot kills 4 more stormvermin
Turn 3:
Skaven-
The cowardly Chieftan decides he's rather vulnerable in a unit of 5 stormvermin so he moves into the slaves on the left who push up. The smaller unit of slaves on the right pushes forward and hopes to hold. The clanrats similarly push forward to threaten their flank. Warpfire moves up in support and plague mortar still hides behind it's parent unit
The death of a Gyrocopter Warp lightning is S10 and easily kills it, doing 5 wounds
The plague mortar scatters and just barely hits one dude...but manages the '5' needed to kill him!
Dwarfs-
Dwarf Warriors charge the slaves in the center of the field
Thunderers rip into the clanrats and in an impressive display kill 5 of them
Grudge Thrower lands right on top of the cannon and does just barely enough to not kill it - it has 1W remaining
Warriors butcher the slaves, only losing 1 model when the cornered rats rule comes into play and drag it down when they scatter! (heavy armor saved 2 guys!)
Turn 4-
(I don't have as many pictures of these turns as my phone was at 1% by this point)
Skaven-
Chieftan decides to rejoin his Stormvermin. Clanrats try to charge the Thunderers on the flank but take 25% casualties on the stand-and-shoot and fail their panic test and flee!! They then lose 4 additional models when they flee through the building
The Warpfire thrower, determined to prove their worth to the boss who is watching them from 1" away line up a shot on the warriors; 14 hits, 12 Wounds... and just like that the dwarfs combat potential is gone.
The plague mortar lands a close scatter on the thunderers on the dwarf right flank, and manages to kill 5 of them! (SO many '5' and '6' the '4' was the center hole!) Dwarfs pass their panic test. (I also just realized I should have removed 6 of the dwarfs, not 5. oops)
Warp Lightning cannon lines up on the thunderers on the Dwarf left flank and kills two.
Dwarfs-
Remaining Warriors + Thane charge the slaves in front of them. Thunderers join in on the flank.
Thunderers on the Dwarf left obliterate the plague mortar
Grudge Thrower scatters way off...
Slaves kill the remaining warriors. Slaves lose some models. Dwarves win combat but the slaves hold.
Turn 5:
Skaven-
Stormvermin charge the thane in the flank
The Warp Lightning Cannon suffers from treachery - suffering a misfire and having a catastrophic meltdown
Warpfire thrower moves up for a shot next turn
Combat sees the Dwarves losing by 1 - they kill 2 rats but combat res sees the dwarfs losing. Both the Thane and the Thunderers hold
Dwarfs-
Grudge thrower tries to land a template on the fleeing clanrats but scatters wide
Thunderers try to shoot the Warpfire thrower but they all either miss or fail to wound
Combat sees two slaves and one stormvermin once again killed, dwarfs however lose on combat res but both units hold
Turn 6:
Skaven-
Clanrats rally! (needing a '6')
Warpfire thrower tries to flame some Thunderers but comes up short
And with that combat commences
No slaves are killed and two stormvermin are killed for no dwarfs in return. Combat res once again sees the dwarfs lose, the Thane breaks (rolled a '10' needed a '9') but isn't caught by the pursuing Stormvermin
Dwarfs-
Thane rallies
Thunderers move up
Grudge thrower tries to hit the stormvermin (hoping to cause a panic test and get the VPs last second) but scatters onto the ongoing combat between the slaves and the thunderers.
One Thunderer and 3 slaves are killed
Combat sees one Thunderer and one slave getting killed, Dwarfs lose on combat res but they hold on
The final state of the battlefield:
Afterthoughts:
Great fun game! Skaven in small blocks (>30/35) are just so fragile, as losing 6 models starts to cut into their LD as was displayed here. I'm amazed that they passed as many panic/break tests as they did!
The dwarfs I thought weren't going to do as well as they did, I thought Skaven numbers would overwhelm them, but terrain hampered them an extra turn allowing the gyrocopter to basically delete the combat threat of the Stormvermin. The Warpfire thrower won the Skaven the game though as it removed the combat threat of the only real combat unit the dwarfs had. Will have to try and make it a higher priority in future games.
The Grudge thrower was disappointing. It scattered every shot but one, and the one shot that it didn't scatter if caused only two wounds to the Warp Lightning cannon. Will continue to bring it as it's cool, but I don't expect it to do much.
