Hey all, My mate and I were looking for clarification about vanguard moves. And in this particular case, move and fire. If a ogre hunter joins a Sabretusk pack, he gains vanguard. Now if he has a harpoon launcher which is move or fire. And uses vanguard, can he still fire? We ask because the move happens before a player's turn, and the move or fire rule states "if the model moved earlier in the turn." Thanks all

That is correct. Since Vanguard happens before the first turn, the Hunter has not moved that turn. The only restriction is that "Units that have made a Vanguard move cannot declare a charge in the first turn if their army goes first."

Thanks for the reply! There may be some hope for my harpoon launcher hunter on foot!

It’s also a valid tactic for moving up units of Empire Outriders to set them up for first turn shooting goodness!

Interesting, so if vanguard doesn't count as moving for the purpose of shooting that would in theory mean no minus one for moving and shooting for fast cavalry.

Interesting, so if vanguard doesn't count as moving for the purpose of shooting that would in theory mean no minus one for moving and shooting for fast cavalry. What? That doesn’t make any sense. As pointed out earlier, Vanguard is a move that happens before the game starts. Just like deploying a unit on the table before the game starts doesn’t prevent a unit with move or fire from shooting, neither does Vanguard. Plus, the fast cavalry rules specifically say they are still subject to the -1.

rahotep75: I am not quite sure what you are objecting to. I understand oldmandan to be saying that Fast Cavalry that has made a Vanguard move, but has not moved in the first turn will not suffer a malus for moving and shooting - which is correct.

Of course if I then make a move with a unit of fast cavalry I would be subject to a -1 penalty. Of course what I'm interested in is the tactical options that this opens up. As long as I don't charge I can get right up the board and potentially behind enemy lines.

I think the term 'move' is a slightly misleading. I know it is stated that the unit makes a 'move' but really 'Vanguard' is made BEFORE the game begins, and should probably more agreeably be refered to as a re-deployment.
