Like ‘most’ Empire players, I’ve built my army around a large core block of halberdiers. I also have plenty of missile troops that can be used to support. I’ve found myself with 20 state troops left over and although not enough to really make a decent stand alone unit, that would work nicely for a detachment (ignoring of course that detachments in 8th aren’t necessarily the best choice). So my question is would you recommend swordsmen or spears?
There was an earlier post about spears and swordsmen seemed to be the preferred choice and I’m leaning that way due to the party and increased WS but I wondered if I was missing a trick if it was purely for detachments.
Edit: I realised that I missed out militia. I own 37 halflings that I’m planning on using as free militia, hence excluded them from the question. So perhaps they should be included in which is the best detachment (but also I should ask what is recommended for me to build out of swordsmen and spears)

If you missed out militia, it is probably because it is the worst choice. Fluff use only. As with Regimental Units, Halberdiers would seem to be the most effective choice. As Detachments, Swordsmen should do better than Spearmen, if only because they do not lose their advantages when conducting a Counter Charge.
