We will likely play 2v2 random pairings with / against Wood Elves Dark Elves Bretonia Ogre Kingdom Orcs Dwarves Lizardmen
Here is my setup for now
Army Book 2013-4 V.8.8.2 Standard
Heroes (451) - Battle Wizard Lore of Beasts
- Battle Wizard Lore of Fire
- Captain of the Empire BSB Heavy Armor & Shield Razor Standard Tormentor Sword
- Master Engineer (focus on Helblaster)
- Warrior Priest Heavy Armor Crown of Command Charmed Shield Luckstone Warrior Bane
Core (380) - 45x Halberdiers with Shield, full command
- Detachment: 5x Archers
Special (509) - 3x Demigryph Knights with Musician
- Great Cannon
- 5x Outriders
Rare (250) - Celestial Hurricanum
- Helblaster Volley gun
NOTES: It was either Steam Tank or Hurricanum (both together are 380 points which is 5 too many for Rare), I decided to take the Hurricanum for that extra 1D power and the portents of battle bonus, which may also boost my teammate. Not to mention Shemteks Storm for additional versatility. Instead, I took the Helblaster with Engineer and a Great Cannon.
I am unsure about the lores I have chosen, but the signature spells seem to give me a few good options. Depending on what they get, I am intending to put them into the archer detachment or assign to the Halberdiers.
Outriders are an experiment, I assume the higher BS will double my hit roll chances for normal hits at long range or multishot at short range, it feels like that should be worth the measly 3 points extra but I'm really not sure. Should I invest the 15 points in something else instead, maybe take a Champ on board?

My play time using Empire is quite limited but I’ve faced some great Empire players quite a lot. Both the Stank and Hurricanum are great options. The Hurricanum gives the list such great synergy and combined with the warrior priest will ensure that you are consistently hitting. The hellblaster also gives really good board control. Most opponents will not want to come anywhere near it, or will threaten it will chaff so you are forced to clear them out instead of firing at something more useful. This is where your outriders could come in useful, using them to kill that chaff (combined with fireball from the fire mage). The Empire army is all about synergising all its elements.

On a general note: almost all of the Empire's characters have a supporting role - for which they need to survive. If they kill something, that is nice, but not necessary. Therefore, they should be equipped first and foremost for survival. That is particularly true of the BSB. Drop the Razor Standard - a BSB with a Magic Standard cannot take any other magic items. Give him full plate armour and the Enchanted Shield or the Dragonhelm + mundane shield. What he does not take, give to the WP.
Which lvl have your Wizards? As a Wizard bunker, 5 Archers are really not enough. In my opinion, 10 is a minimum.
Outriders are Fast cCvalry - make good use of that, in particular their ability to Vanguard (so, take care when and where you deploy them). Give them a musician to improve feigned flight.

My wizard went on foot by himself. The first round, that gave him the ability to single-handedly charge a Gyrocopter, and defeat it, which was amazing (Savage Beasts). Second round I attached him to my Lizard allies. He did quite good but it wasn't enough to win, sadly.
Do the Magic Standards really count in the same degree to the magic items? I did not know that. And I am afraid some of the standards are completely must-have for some strategies. The Steel Standard can mean the difference between suffering an Ogre charge or getting the Lance bonus.

In every AB, there is a side bar in the Heroes category of the Army List with additional rules for the BSB. That usually contains the phrase: "He may carry a magic standard (with no points limit). A model that carries a magic standard cannot have any other magic items." There are some stated exemptions, like the Slann Mage-Priest, who "may have a magic standard (with no points limit) as well as having his normal access of up to 100 points of magic items."
For the Steel Standard, you do not need the BSB. The standard bearer of the Inner Circle Knights or the Reiksguard can carry a magic standard up to 50 points.
