I'm getting ready to start my Tomb Kings army. All my other armies are on green grass bases. Also all my fantasy terrain is designed to be used with European grassland style arrangements with trees and hedges, etc.
But I am considering putting the Tomb Kings on desert bases. My 40K armies are on desert bases. So I already have a ballast mixture for desert.
I don't know. I'm interested to hear what people think. End of the day, ether one will look fine.

Mine are done to match my playing board so it’s dirt and grass.

I guess it depends on whether you want the bases to represent where they're from or where they're invading...

Desert. Easier and faster to make, and easier to justify potential unit fillers and conversions of models rising up from the sand.

I ended up going desert with mine despite having the original green battlemat.
No regrets.

Grass, so it'll fit in with your mat and scenery. Plus you might occasionally field an allied army, or have a monster that gets shared between armies (e.g. Storm of Magic).

If I ever started a Tomb Kings army, I'd be sure to base them in a desert scheme - my Lizardmen have a rainforest floor basing scheme and my Beastmen have a woodland leaflitter theme for their bases, both to represent their preferred homeland and origins, and separate them from the standard 'Old World Grassland' theme I've used for my Dwarfs, Greenskins, Skaven and High Elves.

I did my Tomb Kings on desert despite all other armies and scenery being grass based, I've now got a desert game mat but will have to create a whole set of desert terrain to go with it!

Desert, and add a few grass tufts here and there. This will still keep the theme strong, but also add an element that visually connects to grass terrain.
