This post is only theory-hammer, I don't have the rules yet, but based on screen shots on stuff regarding the army list, I believe I've formulated my TOW tactics for my mainstay Goblin units.
First a few assumptions:
- TOW does not have supporting attacks (other than spears) and does not have step-up (meaning if a unit charges in and wipes out the front rank, there will be no enemy return attacks).
- Goblins have lower Leadership, but they add their rank bonus to their Leadership like the Skaven armies of WFB.
- Goblins can have a max rank bonus of +3, standard units only get a max of +2.
- Units must maximize in combat and corner-to-corner models can attack.
- Spear-arm warriors can attack from the second rank.
Equipment & Unit Size (based on the assumptions above)
I'm thinking that I want to equip my mainstay core Goblins infantry as follows:
- 40 models strong (perhaps 48), deployed 8 wide and 5 ranks deep
- Equipped with spears, shields, light armour, Full Command
- 3 Nasty Skulkers
- One unit with the Big Red Raggedy Flag (+1 WS and +1 combat res)
Da Plan:
Against a standard 5-wide enemy unit charging my Goblin Horde, the unit will make 6 attacks (with champion) with the potential to kill a max of 6 Goblins. My Goblin Horde will attack with a potential 18 Attacks (20 Attacks when all 8 models are brought to bare)! 7 models in contact, plus 7 models in second rank from spears, +1 attack from the Boss for 15 Attacks (all at WS 3 from the Big Red Flag). The Nasty Skulkers add another 6 Attacks at WS 5 and Armour Bane 2 (not to mention Strike First). Even if the enemy killed 6 Goblins, I'd still have 12 Attacks! My Nasty Skulkers are probably going to kill one or two enemies before they attack, too.
The Goblins also have a decent armour save at 5+. Not to mention their WS 3 will put them on par with many enemy units.
Regrading rank bonus, the enemy must kill 14 Goblins to negate one point of rank bonus and 22 Goblins to negate two points of rank bonus.
With full ranks, the Goblins will start at +5 (+3 ranks, +1 standard, +1 Big Red Flag).
If there is a rule that adds +1 combat bonus for being the widest unit, they would likely get that. And it may be viable to consider 9 or 10 wide. Though in this rough theory hammer thought, I'm thinking 8-wide will be ideal for spear-armed Gobbos.
Let me know what you think or if you can verify any of my assumptions...
