Just had my first two games with the Empire in TOW. I noticed two units, I used a lot in previous editions of Warhammer Fantasy, which are now quite useless.
Let's have a general discussion about the Empire as a whole and tell me your thoughts on the two units below.
Warrior Priests
Supposed to be a buffing character for your troops by using the prayers of Sigmar / Ulric. The prayers go off when you pass a leadership test, using the models own LD. Inspiring presence of the general or BSB re-roll will not work. Unfortunately, the LD is 7 (Priest) or 8 (Lector), so 50% of the time the prayers will not take effect.
It's probably better to take a General or Captain of the Empire to get a good morale buff or a Wizard with Daemonology for Combat buffs. Both are more reliable.
It might be my luck, or more the lack of luck, but just before I was engaged into combat, my Priest struggled to find the right words to encourage the unit he was attached to... and then got eaten by a giant.
Pistoliers
A light cavalry unit with a brace of pistols and heavy armor. In close combat the pistols count as additional attacks with strength: user.
Their main purpose should be to hinder your opponent units to march forward and harass them with range attacks, or go for the enemy artillery in the backfield. The main problem with this unit is the impetuous special rule in combination with their low range pistols. On a roll of 1-3 they will charge the enemy. The rule itself is quite fluffy, representing their eager to proof themselves, similar to the Knights Errant of Bretonnia, but the lack the melee punch of the latter.
In one case, mine did end up getting slaughtered by Orcs as they thought a frontal charge of a big block of Big Unz would be a great idea.
On another occasion they miraculously survived the charge into a melee block, and fled. I was able to control then for one turn to bring them into a better position then they charged another melee block and got slaughtered.
