If a unit of cold ones/trolls fails a stupidity test,
How far does it move forward?

No one knows for sure. I think it’s that they make a full non-march move, straight forward. Some people agree with that. Some people think that they can move any amount up to their normal move value.

It moves during the Compulsory Moves sub-phase. To me that implies the player cannot control the distance the unit moves. Units subject to Compulsory movement always move their full move distance. But maybe I'm filling in the blanks and the rules don't explicitly say that. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Correct, Stupid units that fail their Stupidity test make a full non-march move, straight ahead, in the Compulsory Moves sub-phase. There is nothing to say the unit is allowed to move less than that.
