Are they empire knight conversions or Gryphon legion. I'm guessing the former by your comments. I only ask as pretty sure the legion had double back banners, whilst the lancers only had single (I can't remember the name of the banners either, is it Con or something like that?). P.s it always feel like looking at an art display when you post. I've said it before but. Muchos jealousy and admiration.

You don't dry brush? Looks awesome and as if you have painted every featherstroke separate by hand! Drybrush only suits big feathers, I'm afraid. These wings are very small and the drybrushing actually causes more trouble and time than picking on individual feathers Are they empire knight conversions or Gryphon legion. P.s it always feel like looking at an art display when you post. I've said it before but. Muchos jealousy and admiration. Knoffles, I'm not the fan of both metal GW Winged Lancers and Gryphon Legionaires as I think they are very 'wooden'. That's why I used the old Empire knight plastic kits and the old GW metal Winged Lancer wings to make this unit, much more dynamic abeit not very Kislevite looking. Warhammer Kislevite Winged Lancers and Gryphon legionaires are based on the famed Polish Winged Hussars during the 17th century, who attached one or two huge wooden arcs behind their armour and put eagle, ostrich, swan...feathers on them. GW was only keen on the one wing version, that's why we have Winged lancers and Gryphon boys looking like these: Winged Lancers Gryphon Legion: But most artistic historical Winged Hussars should look like this: (First Legion 54 mm) Hitherto, no company has ever released a 28mm line of Winged Hussars that good! Warlord, Foundry, Assault Group...all horrible sculpts. My wait will go on... By the way, thank mucho

Do you happen to know what purpose the "arcs" served? They seem like they'd be so cumbersome. Not to mention the wind friction when riding horseback!
They look awesome though! You've done a great job with your painting! I love them!

Do you happen to know what purpose the "arcs" served? They seem like they'd be so cumbersome. Not to mention the wind friction when riding horseback! There are many explanations concerning the 'wings' of the historical Polish hussars but the one I find the most plausible is that those feathered wooden arcs would create a lot of 'weird' noise when the rider gallops at full speed. Now imagine there are thousands of these knights charging at you, in addition to the great amount of 'normal' sound like hooves pounding on the ground, armors and weapons clanging, we also have a massive 'unnatural' buzz that if it may not scare your very brave heart, it would definitely do your horse. In Warhammer Fantasy 6th Edition, this 'fluff' was celebrated in the famous rule for both the Winged Lancers and the Gryphon Legion, "The Glorious Charge": Whenever those riders charge at the enemy (and within the charge range), the charged unit (who isn't immune to Psychology) has to make a Leadership test, if they fail, they flee (effectively equaling Terror)! I used to have heap of fun with these boys when they scared loads of self-important folks off the board Sure, I agree that in reality, it looks very cumbersome, but that is when we see things from our 21st century perspective when scientific efficiency is heavily stressed. But then from the 1st World War backward, our forefathers always went to war in the most unbelievably ridiculous fashion as possible. From the extremely big, ponderous and elaborate headgear with tiny visors of Medieval knights to the super gaudy battle dress with full canopy of face powder and wigs of the Baroque soldiery, the Winged Hussars' eccentricity certainly doesn't rank among the most outrageous (still the most cool though!)

Finally, Hà Nội got its first taste of multiplayer Warhammer Fantasy 8th Edition. An High Elves Warband led by Prince Tyrion, which included his regular drinking companions 7 Dragon Princes, a Chracian Lion Chariot, 5 Ellyrian Reaver and an Eagle Claw faced off an equally impressive Tilean force composed of 16 Marksmen of Miragliano, 36 pikemen and a cannon, well marshalled by a famed (yet no name) Condottieri. The battle exploded in a short yet intense burst of violence as two sides numbered a great amount of Warhammer's best killers among their ranks. The Tileans got the 1st turn and the Marksmen promptly shot down 4 Princes. Luckily, the cannon misfired. In their turn, the Asurs totally encircled their opponents and despite losing the rest of the princes to shooting in the Tilean's 2nd turn, managed to charge off all their important units, Prince Tyrion and Lion Chariot on the pikemen while Ellyrian Reavers assaulting the Condottieri. The latter of course had no problem butchering the High Elf Light Horsemen but unwisely chose to pursue them far away, leaving the Pikemen to be thrashed and chased down by Prince Tyrion (not before they heroically skewered the Chariot to their credit!) In the last turn, the Marksmen avenged the death of several of their members by turning the Eagle Claw crew into 2 porcupines. With his army rather dead, which was a damning indictment of his sorry generalship, Prince Tyrion manly conceded defeat, though theoretically he could handily smash them all! Anyway, since my club's absolute majority are interested in 40k, this battle was mere appetizer for a long afternoon of the Far Future action, cultimated with the marquee contest between 2000 pts Ravenwing of the boss of the first and only GW shop in Viet Nam (who bothered to travel from Ho Chi Minh City to meet us) versus 1000 pts of Astra Militarum, reinforced by 1000 pt Ultramarine (embedded with, uhm, Gulliman!) Understandably, the boys on bike got trounced badly with only two bikers managing to run back to the south with tail firmly between their legs! Well, only one little game but at least it's a start of Warhammer Fantasy in VN no less!

What did the GW manager think of you running their defunct games system? It was in my house so if he voiced even the lightest displeasure at my favorite system, he would get kicked out unceremoniously as a gnoblar. Nah, just joking, he used to play Lizardmen and Brets, also the 99% of his sale in the North of Vietnam goes through my club, thus he is very, say, symphathetic .

This past Sunday Mahbruck and I had our first battle at his house. I took a few photos of the battle so he asked me to write up a battle report. This was a 2500 point battle between High Elves and the Dogs of War. Our army lists can be seen in the previous posts on this thread. Both of the generals were quite rusty as Mahbruck has been playing a lot of 40k recently and I having not played a fantasy game since the End times. Some tactical and rules mistakes were thus bound to happen... I had fun though and I hope Mahbruck also enjoyed the match. Pre-game thoughts
The day before I made some quick calculations on which match ups I prefered. I felt I had the range advantage so planned to play a little bit defensively and wait for him to come to me. With some manuevering with my chaff I could then set up favourable charges i.e phoenix guard in the front and the swordmasters in the flank of the pikemen etc. Hanging back I could also wittle his big blocks down to manageable chunks. Deployment
Mahbruck prepared the terrain before I came and I won the roll off and chose the side I thought would favour my playstyle the best though I did not feel that the one side had any great advantage over the other. We rolled for magic and Mahbruck's lvl4 unfortunately did not get throne of vines, he did get earthblood, awaken the woods, flesh to stone and the dreaded dwellers below. His lvl1 chose fireball. My lvl4 got melkoth’s, withering, pit of shades and mindrazor. My lvl2 got searing doom and enchanted blades. In deployment my lack of games showed and I felt I made some of my first errors. The way we ended up deploying Mahbruck managed to tie up the swordmaster unit for the whole game using only a unit of fast cavalry. At least I managed to stick to my overall strategy. Mahbruck deployed rather aggressively with his infantry and cavalry on the 12” mark. Unfortunately this left the crossbowmen no other space but the far side of the table. Turn 1
DoW marched up to take the elves head on. DoW magic saw his lvl1 cast an irresistable medium fireball on a unit of sisters killing 7 and causing them to flee on LD9. Luckily they didn’t flee of the table. In the backlash he lost some pikemen and the rest of his magic dice. DoW shooting saw both the cannon and galloper gun shoot short of their target the bolt thrower. The duellists caused 2 wounds to the vanguarded reivers and the crossbowmen did a couple of wounds on the remaining sister unit. In the HE turn we had our first unanswered query... Does a warmachine have 360 degree LoS? Can a cavalry model embedded in a warmachine charge in any direction or only in the actual models’ front arc? (Insert HE movement pucture) We didn’t find the answer so I decided to rather use my reivers and silverhelms to double flee his heavy cavalry unit than to go for the cannons. The remaining 3 reivers on the other side decided to chaff up the two infantry blocks and my swordmasters shuffled back a few inches. The phoenix guard moved towards the big cavalry unit and the one seaguard unit moved over to support the mage facing the oncoming infantry blocks. In the magic phase I tried casting a boosted melkoths on the pikemen but Mahbruck saw through my plan to pit of shades them and he stopped it. I went for my back up plan and withered the paymasters’ bodyguard to toughness 1. All the units that could shot at the bodyguard and wittled them down considerably. Somehow they failed their rerollable LD8 and ran away 😳 The boltthrower across from the cannons decided to multishot the engineer on horse and as he was a different unit type than the crew (cavalry vs infantry) he didn’t get a look out sir. Three bolts impaled him on the spot. Turn 2
The big cavalry unit charged into the reivers who decided to flee, they redirected into the silverhelms who also fled and Volunds Venators were stranded in front of the phoenix guard block. Mahbruck thought ahead though and his fast cavalry swept in front of the phoenix guard to redirect them. The big pike block also charged the reivers who chaffed them up. The reivers fled but not far enough and the pike block caught them. Very unfortunate as they didn't have far to flee to bump through the silverhelms. This meant that the pike block would be able to reform which they did but Mahbruck did not think far enough ahead as he reformed them facing the seaguard but failed to keep the phoenix guard in his hireling wizard's front arc for the dreaded dwellers. Lucky break for the High elves! Magic saw more irresistible fireballs flying and the target was again a sister of averlorn unit while the backlash again only did a few wounds on the unit and 1 on the mage. This time the sisters took enough casualties to flee of the board! The cannon failed to hit the boltthrower again while the galloper gun misfired and would be out of action for a turn more. In the High elves turn the phoenix guard charged the chaff, the silverhelms charged the rallied paymaster and his bodyguard hoping to snipe the paymaster. The reivers rallied to chaff up the venators again and the silverhelms rallied next to the phoenix guard. In the magic phase the metal mage managed to sneak through an enchanted blades on a seaguard unit and all shooting went into the pikes causing enough casualties to make them failed their rerollable LD8... The Dogs of War clearly was not in the mood to be courageous today. In close combatthe silverhelms failed to kill the paymaster and broke from combat, luckily the they bumped through the fleeing pikes and the paymasters bodyguard could not catch them. The phoenix guard naturally took care of the chaff. Turn 3
Our allotted time to play was running out so Mahbruck decided to charge the chaff with his venators meaning in my turn the phoenix guard would be able to charge the knights. He clearly would have avoided this combat if we had more time but he decided to be a sport. This speaks volumes of his attitude and sportsmanship. Thank you Mahbruck. The rest of the match ended soon after when I charged in with the phoenix guard and managed to cast mindrazor with irresistible force. S9 phoenix guard killed all the knights before they could strike back and that was that. Worth a mention is that the hireling wizard did cast dwellers on the mindrazor-ed phoenix guard and being so rusty with 8th, we made the mistake as to think the phoenix guard counted as being Strenght 9. I should have thus lost about half the unit instead of just 6 models. We called the game at this point as I had to leave for work. Thank you Mahbruck for a great first game and hopefully you will get your revenge soon
