It's not exactly THE major issue, but it does highlight a major issue - the issue of balance over flavor, or maybe reality over fantasy.

Good grief what a boring thread. People threatening revolt over female models NOT having boobplates? Is this what the hobby has come to? I REALLY hope GW starts fantasy back up to stick it to the folks over there... When they have such crushingly tedious and sanctimonious fellas in the Content team, good luck getting the other Warhammer fans on board (who are the only source for 9th Age recruitment)! By the way, I don't think we need the GW to show us any boon. CA already did with their greatest game Warhammer Total War and now the Old World is popular than ever. As Gjnoronh suggested, we should help creating a new comp set for all coming 8th edition tournaments. I would gladly poke my hands at DoW and High Elves.

My idea is that balance will always be elusive in any game as complex as Warhammer. How could the game be balanced when you're not even playing by the same rules (army books)? And is it at all meaningful to talk about balance when random dice rolls are completely decisive? I think that the "quest for balance" will tend to reduce complexity, craziness and possibly flavour. I'm not saying that a measure of balance is unimportant, but I think that a reasonable goal for a game of this complexity is "any army book can beat any other army book on a given day", as it was phrased elsewhere. Chess - now that's a perfectly balanced game. Then there are fantasy miniatures wargames such as Dragon Rampant where everyone has access to the same options, which of course means that the game is balanced in that regard. In those cases, it becomes the responsibility of the players to bring the flavour and design cool, conceptual armies that will be fun to play against. But maybe that responsibility is unavoidable anyway? All that said, I'm most impressed by the 9th age project. I think that they really did prove something there. But for me, I'd rather just play Warhammer.

Just want to throw a little love at 9th age too. They did an amazing job and put a lot of time and effort into it. I'm just a pure 8th Edition player, I don't want to homebrew anything and since 9E is not GW, it's not official.

Imo the 9th Age has lost its way. I love fanmade stuff so was initially very supportive of the 9th age movement.
I was keeping an eye on it for new units to bring into 8th/Chillhammer however it has now moved a bit too far from Warhammer and I have lost most of my interest.
Balance isn't all that in 9th (from all the forum posts complaining about balance). They now use a different points system and have as many have said have given up flavour in the persuit of balance. Probably the best example of this which I can think of is Insane Courage which is one of my favourite rules in Warhammer and has created some classic, memorable battle moments. This rule was considered 'too random' for 9th Age and has been removed.
I'll stick with 8th Edition Warhammer as my fantasy battles game of choice thank you.
