I haven't really used special characters over the years, what with them not being allowed in GW tournaments meant I steered away from them.
I remember using Khalida to stop a mate of mine running riot with a Dark Elf annointed, it was a special DE/Slaanesh list which allowed him to have an initiative 9 hero (Lord?) run around with a great weapon going first in any combat. Khalida at the time went at the same time as him so we had to dice off to see who went first. Khalida killed the Elf.
Apart from that... Oh, I've used Thorek as well. OK, apart from those two, I'd not really used any special characters. Recently though I've included Tetto’eko in my Lizardman army. I also dusted off my Dwarves and looked at Ungrim (inspired by a topic here) but it was infact one of the abilities he possess and any dragon slayer would have.
Page 45 of the dwarf book, column 2. Dragon slayer: When attacking monsters, the slayers attacks have the multiple wounds (d3) special rule.
Now MY OPPONENT who was playing Ogres said the multiple wounds counted against his monstrous infantry, cavalry etc, now I don't really use the models, didn't really use them in 6th or 7th either but wanted the models in my collection so while I liked the idea of chopping up some Ogre ass I'm not sure the Monster rule applies to anything other than say Dragons or greater daemons and the like.
Is my opponent right and I get d3 wounds against Ogres or am I right and it's just a single wound?
Cheers
Greg

To me this is very clear. Monsters as used here refers to the unit type monster. There are separate and different unit types for monstrous cavalry and monstrous infantry. So a dragon slayer would not get the D3 wounds against ogres or for that matter any monstrous infantry of monstrous cavalry, only against monsters.

I agree with you in this case. The rule book would specify by name the unit type that this could be used against.

GW could have cleared up any ambiguity by simple saying under dragon slayer: "against units with the unit type: monster, blah blah blah..."
I agree though in this case: it's only against monsters that this ability works. I'm going to look into this tonight though with a rulebook and see if I can change my mind.
Keep up the good brainbusters guys!

I think they did, now words like monsters, infantry, etc. are all clearly defined by the rules as to what they are/mean. This was not so for the 7 prior editions!!

Funny how my opponent said I could and that worked against him - shows that the rule wasn't clear enough.

The rule is plenty clear. Your opponent just didn't comprehend that there is a rules difference between 'monster' and 'monstrous XXXX'.
