Hi
I am thinking of getting some magnetized trays to help out with transport and speed of my game.
Question do you keep a border of the tray or do em just the size of the unit?

I have a border on two of the sides. That way if I want to put two of them side by side they'll butt right up against each other with no gaps. I like having borders because it gives me something to hold onto (I don't like touching my models more than I have to, as I don't want to have to repaint anything I've already done)

I usually put borders on my trays, though, I must admit, my trays need a lot of work!

If you don't mind I would love to see a photo.

I'll try to take one when I go home over lunch. I have tons of different sizes.
It's good to have several that can fit 5 wide, 4 deep (20 man unit) and some that can fit 5 wide 2 deep (10 man unit). You'll want at least one that can fit 10 wide and 3 deep (30 man unit) for your Eternal Guard. Those would be the biggest pain to move around. I'd also make and extension for it that could fit 10 wide, 1 deep with only the ends with borders so that if you wanted to add another 10 Eternal Guard in the future, you can simply butt that up against your 30 man unit.
Basically, look at your models and make some to fit those guys. As you add more, you can grow your trays as well.

I've found that I can make some trays out of Bass Wood that work well and I can customize them to fit my needs. I've also gotten several though eBay purchases where the seller simply sent their trays with the models.
I have tons of Bass Wood left over from my days in college getting my Architecture degree. Comes in handy.

If you don't mind I would love to see a photo. I do the front and then half will have it on the left side, and half will have it on the right side. All my trays are either 5x2, 5x3, 6x2, 6x3, or 7x2. If I want to go horde then I just put two 5xX trays side by side, (6x2 if it's trolls, ogres, or something) this is where having half of your lips on either side comes in handy as the entire movement tray now has borders on at least 3 sides. If I'm going deeper than 3 then I'll put another base behind the front one with the edge in the back. I can go as large as 10x6 before there starts to be edges inbetween ranks (not a big deal for me though) I can take pictures when I get home.

I'm just rather anal and like having the right sized tray for the unit size I'm taking. I do tend to fall short if I reform to say 6 wide. And I always have edges to a tray as it makes it easier to move/pickup

These are my movement trays. As you can see, there is a good mix of what I might need.

If you click "Get share links" on imgur you can select the bbcode link (which is basically the link you posted above in [ img] tags)

Yes, edges do come in handy as they make a tray much easier to pick up during gaming.

This is not a big deal for me either way. But, I'll go against the grain here and say that I prefer no edges on regiments bases. Don't like how it gets a bit in the way of gaming when reforming into exotic formations or in complicated multi-unit combats. I will admit that it looks better when properly flocked/sanded compared to plain base rims.

Im going to try some small without edges in the beginning and see if I hate it its easy to add later anyway. I will start with 2 trays 5x3 eternal guard (30 units). It will be possible to change later anyway. My process will be buying magnet sheets and add/glue cardbox to bottom (this can be replaced with bigger cardbox with edges). Not sure about the name/word cardbox. I am thinking of the hard paper shoeboxes are made of and not cardbord. In theory it should be enough to let the magetism through if wanted to put them in a moving bag. But also force the magnets on the units in one way and become stronger. I will just need some magnet sheets now I will add photoes when done.

I order mine from Shogun Miniatutes I think they are great. Would highly recommend. They are a Da Boyz GT sponsor but I have used them for years prior to that and honestly think they do very good work. He offers multiple styles including lip on three sides which is my preferred. Good price fast solid work. If you use them please tell him that Da Boyz GT sent you shogunminiatures.com

Just to slightly threadjack but it falls under the same topic, what size magnets do peeps use to hold the models to the trays? Would you use different sizes for 20 vs 25mm models. I'm seriously considering doing it just for quickness of setup for games.
