I've always run the Goblin Boss on Gigantic Spider solo. Now, the Night Goblin on Giant Cave Squig can work well with a unit of Squig Hoppers, more as a delivery system though.
I have participated in a game vs an O&G player (with my Empire) who ran 3 Goblin Bosses on Gigantic Spiders. They frustrated me to no end. It was partly because of the scenario too though. The table had a river running through the middle of the board and had one bridge through the middle and one waaaaaaaaay over to the edge of the board. The O&G player ran his three Bosses up to the bridge and parked them there, one behind the other. His 2 Rock Lobbas and 2 Doom Divers just went to town then. He also brought up a Squig herd (40 strong) across the river and sat an Arock spider on his edge of the river (so that if I were to engage on that side, I would be in the river and lose any rank bonus). My units attacking the bridge in the middle just crashed off those 3 Bosses like waves against a cliff. I eventually wore down the Squig herd (and took a bomb in the face after killing them) and also brought a unit of Outriders around the back via the far bridge, but it was pretty much too little too late by the time they got to his war machines.

--------Yes, me too. One of the best units in a Goblin army!

And +2 armour save. So the Big Boss has 3 Wounds and a 3+ armour save (with light armour and shield). If you give him a piece of magic armour you can increase it to a 2+ save, not bad for a Goblin! Not to mention, the Spider provides three S4 poison attacks, plus a stomp.
Note: Spider and Boss are both T4.
