Absolutely this. Most of my armies I protect the BSB better than I protect my general because those rerolls are often a lot more valuable then the LD the general provides.
Beastmen with the Beast Banner are the only one that comes to mind immediately as reason to take a magic banner. Even then it's possible to decently protect him with his innate T5 and a 2+ armor save thanks to being able to still take mutations and can get scaly skin on him.

Never put a magic banner on a BSB, if it can be taken by the unit's standard bearer. The re-roll of Ld tests is already worth the BSB, but if the BSB is killed, the banner is lost. If it is on the standard bearer, the Banner lives on. I agree with that, when I write my lists the Dwarves get Grungni as it gives him a ward save but usually combo'd with a couple of others and recently I wanted to use my Bret with the banner of the lady (at least I got a virtue) but BOTH magical abilities couldn't be taken by a standard unit and I'd say it's only really the dwarf BSB that takes a magical banner in any of my games, the Bret usually gets a 1+ rerollable save. MR and the items that allow 2+ ward saves (they were immunity in previous editions) against fire based attacks are useful against metal spells as well, to that end I'd look to take them but fire generally I'm not too bothered about. The BotWD is certainly one of the few major problems in 8th. I can't believe they didn't errata it either. I would also personally have liked to see the WoC Daemon Prince be more along the lines of the DoC Daemon Prince. Ie Daemonically unstable.

Yeah, Sisters of Avelorn don't have the option to take a magical banner or even a normal banner for that matter, hence why I suggested giving the BSB the BotWD. And like I said, they'd have to have the Everqueen and maybe a Handmaiden in the unit as well. If the enemy gets to them, it's over anyway.

Botwd is the single reason why I normally take one unruned OG with an engineer in most of my Dwarf all comers lists. It allows you to potentially mince that unit. Irondrakes also ignore it as their attacks are just flaming. Doesn't help against alarielles bloody ward in the death star though.
