Back in 2011, I emailed the O&G army book author, Jeremy Vetock, regarding a couple questions I had regarding Grom the Paunch. He emailed me back with the answers, which were then confirmed by the Official WFB FAQer at the time. For some reason, this Q&A never made it into the Official O&G FAQ. I figured I should memorialize the questions and responses here, as I've never posted this anywhere before. Enjoy!
Question and Response from Jeremy Vetock (author of the 8th edition Warhammer: Orcs & Goblins):
Q: If Grom the Paunch, riding his chariot (which counts as the army
Battle Standard Bearer), breaks from combat and is forced to flee, is
Grom AND his chariot destroyed due to the 'Last Stand' rule that
governs Battle Standard Bearers or is just the chariot destroyed? I.E.
Can Grom himself still flee, while Niblit and the chariot are destroyed
or is Grom also destroyed? Note the current FAQ only confirms that
Niblit is destroyed and does not mention what Grom's fate should be.
I've been playing it, in agreement with my opponents, that Grom may
flee since he is not the actual BSB.
Jeremy Vetock: My (not official in any way) ANSWER: Dang, after all that build up I don't have much. I think you've got it right Kevin, that's how I'd play it. Poor old fatty forced to run away out of the shambles of his crushed match-stick chariot. Not very dignified for the most awesome Gobbo ever - but there it is.
Q2: On a side note, if Grom is slain (in general), the chariot does not have
a LD value, I'm assuming it should be LD6 as in previous editions?
Jeremy Vetock: My (not official in any way) ANSWER: Aha! Very clever of you putting the much harder question second so I could build up a false layer of confidence. This is a toughie, but that never stops me from taking a (mostly incorrect) stab at it. It could be LD6 as you suggest (and in previous editions) but that's not quite right for me - as the LD 6 is really from its Goblin crew - of which it, traditionally, has none. It does have Niblet - who is a Night Goblin (LD5) but I don't think he's really crew either (he's sort of a sidekick model ala Lookout Gnoblars, Watchers in the Dark, and whoever that little guy that used to follow Ghazghkull way back in the day was). So....I'd probably assume it was an uncrewed chariot and make up some random moving chart BUT that clearly isn't in the rules OR going to fly in a tournament situation (and you'll be labelled as 'mad' and smaller, urchin children from out of Dickens' tales might throw rocks at you upon your approach). You could use LD 3 for the Giant Wolf, but this too is unsatisfactory - as other Chariots never use the LD stat of their pulling beasts. So, in a roundabout way - I've confirmed that I am dangerous with FAQ questions and likely to confound and or confuse, if not outright confusticate. But, in the end, I'd agree that LD6 is a fair and fine way to play it and treats it as a Goblin Chariot (but in my gaming group we'd make up some random uncrewed chariot rules 'cos its bound to provide more mayhem and you'll never roll below your Wolves' LD and be forced to move using the directional die!).
Surely the ever sensible Matthew 'he-of-the-iron-thumb" Hobday will leap in with a return email telling you to disregard most if not all of what I said and supply some better reasoned rules and perhaps update his online Library of official FAQs.
Response from Matthew Hobday (Official WFB 8th Ed. FAQer at the time):
Matthew Hobday: The answers Jeremy gave are correct (Grom isn't killed when he flees and the
chariot should be leadership 6 if he is).
